Hmm I googled it, it sound good, and I will try it.

I am sad to say that my experience with the finer spirits are somewhat limited. Up until now the only whiskeys I've tried are: Maker's Mark, Jameson's, and Jack Daniels. Jack is probably my favorite. :-/ But when I'm drinking in refined company I feel like they consider it declasse. So I wanted to branch out with out busting my bank.

Other recommendations are welcome.

The best buy in whiskey is Wild Turkey Rye at under 20 per bottle (I think 750ml).  My favorite is Wild Turkey Rare Breed at between 30 and 35 for 750ml.  I like Makers Mark as well.  I prefer whiskeys along the lines of Bourbon, Rye and Irish.  I am not a fan of the sweet stuff.

Kind of a broad question isn't it?

Yamakazi is a fun subsitute for a single malt scotch, and (I think) better than most in its price range

Templton rye is awsome, but that may not be sold outside of Chicago

Gentleman Jack, Jamesons, and Makers are good stand byes

Dalmore scotch, best single malt scotch on bang for buck

Is Gentleman Jack distinctly different from regular Jack? Or, similarly, is Jack Daniels Single Barrel any better?

I would say it is distinctl different.  It is much smoother and tastes a little smokier.  Single Barrel I have only had 1 glass of, I can not say how it was, other than my initial impression was favorable.
