I've been reading Lincoln's Marxists, an excellent book. It mentions Joseph Wedemeyer, a general in the Union Army during the Civil War. Apparently Lincoln personally appointed him to the position.
Anybody know of any other confirmed socialists in the ranks of the Union Army or involved with the Civil War?
ps Wedemeyer, naturally, was a Marxist as the title suggests. I meant to specify.
Apparently, Lincoln had a written correspondence with Marx.
Fool on the Hill: Apparently, Lincoln had a written correspondence with Marx.
Yeah, it covers that correspondence. It wasn't like they were frequent pen pals, but yes, Marx wrote Lincoln congratulating him on his re-election and commending him on his war "against slavery," and the Lincolns Administration wrote one back thanking him for his support. It's a pretty bad thing to hold on your mantle as president if you ask me and 90% of Americans, yet Levin and the other establishment Republicans tout Lincoln as being the best president after George Washington.
As a general, Washington was cool in my book, but he was the first pres to wage a war for federal taxation during the Whiskey Rebellion. That's when it all started going downhill if you ask me....
I always thought Lincoln was more of a national socialist than a communist. He was more of a national socialist because his mentor (Henry Clay) was a national socialist.
In any event, the Republican Party was "red from the start". Alan Stang wrote about it.

Ain't it the truth...
