Here is my innocent question:

I am not very well-read on capital and production, but I have a decent understanding of basic market mechanisms. It seems like this conversation will be fun :D

Kelvin, the guy's fairly nice (although imo misguided), so I don't think the sarcasm was warranted.

"Communism inherently must have technological advancement to allow an abundance. it requires capitalism first to have the industrial development. Onces industry is free from the shackles of competition between firms, and profit mechanism. Automation would be able to be increased."

Is he hinting at the venus project? No one has to work, machines do everything.

Your friend got the role of technology in lowering profits dead wrong.   Actually, technology, at least for a short period of time (as profits are temporary), as an improvement for making a particular good, will increase profits, because the firm has reduced costs.  Additionally, technology that allows new goods to be made may provide profits to an industry, provided that customers actually want the good.  In the long run, there is no such thing as profits generally being reduced, only interest rates from investments being lower.  Lower time preference can be caused by productivity increases (as people decide they want to save their increased income/existing savings.  True, a shift in time preference may cause some buisnesses to fail, but other businesses will adapt, and still others will enter due to profit opportunities from this new environment.

You'll both spend most of your time talking past each other, I imagine; you're speaking different languages philosophically, economically, and ideologically.

I'm inclined to say you're correct (and I'm coming from a more-or-less lefty standpoint). Wheylous will need to learn how to speak Hegelonion, and the communist bloke will need to learn English before anything fruitful comes about.

Hegelonion

I looked that up on Google and I got two hits. One of them was this thread itself. Care to explain?

He must mean the language of Hegel.

There are probably better things to do with your time:
