Do you think most people oppose complete freedom because of fear?  They fear that free markets will not operate fairly and safely?

They do not understand how free markets will work...the day to day details, the nuts and bolts, and so they have fear?

Absolutely. It's a tough subject to convert people on, and that's why the best way to change minds is through example.

Pre-conceived notions/uncertainty/fear.

I had always been impressed by the fact that there are a surprising number of individuals who never use their minds if they can avoid it, and an equal number who do use their minds, but in an amazingly stupid way. - Carl Jung, Man and His Symbols

Fear, possibly, but I think it's also because they believe in altruism/collectivism in the Randian sense and see free marketers as mean and heartless.

Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to Marxism.

I think people labor under what I call "the illusion of certainty". The state promotes this illusion, whereas the free market doesn't.
