I'd guess that silver is easier to counterfeit than gold because gold is worth more per weight, so people are more scrutinizing of it.
silver is easier to counterfeit because most metals are colored similarly to silver, with gold, copper, and cobalt being the few exceptions. the density also makes it easier.
