I suppose you could use the two interchangeably, but "free market" emphasizes the importance of unrestricted and unhampered operation of market processes. As for synonyms, you could use:

"The free-enterprise system"

"Laissez-faire"

"Unhampered market"

"liberalism"

"Natural Order"

etc.

because there is a mundane understanding of what a market is (that place where people go to do trades;commonly experienced) whereas what is the mundane understanding of 'economy' (it's an abstract concept) ?

Here is a list of some 'near enough' synonyms that you might come across.

capitalism, free enterprise, free market, laissez faire economy, private enterprise economy,free-enterprise economy, open market,self-regulating market ,competitive market, free trade ,open trade

plus the Brights suggestion Stick out tongue

I have a soft spot for unhampered market myself, that and capitalism

As long as you are making a list, you can probably toss in "spontaneous order" as well.

Voluntary exchange would be good if it weren't a bit of a mouthful.

why dont you call it what you feel comfortable calling it.

if those you are speaking to dont understand it then if they feel you are worth asking they will ask for claification...or call you an idiot.

plenty of online resources for synonyms.

go to it.
