I listen to Hard Rock and a little bit Heavy Metal. My music tastes shaped in early childhood - perhaps, when I was 8-9 years. That time I examined my father's tapes collection. Occasionally, the first tape was Scorpions, that I really loved (I could listen to Wind of Change for hours). Then I discovered Def Leppard (Pyromania and Hysteria albums) and, finally, Accept. So, these are my 3 best rock bands. The reason why I prefer mostly old school of rock is that I don't like contemporary pop music and most bands that play "alternative".
Of course, my music experience is not confined to these bands. My music collection on HDD comprises dozens of artists. Other bands that I could claim to be my favourite ones are Nightwish, The Beatles, Rammstein, Blackmore's Night, MSG, Blind Guardian, Dire Straits, a-ha, and others.

I think he ended up showing a latent mental illness (bipolar or something), that got him in trouble. Great bass player though. Wooten is aesome too (look up his Norweigen Wood cover on youtube). Cool he grew up in your hood. Deal grew up in mine.
Those two are probably the best electric Jazz Bass Players, Fav Jazz Bassists though would be Mingus and Ron Carter who were strictly upright. Than again Mingus is one of my favorite people. He is a better composer than Debussey I think.

On Saturday I auditioned for American Idiot with Fade Away - Oasis. It seemed like a similar theme.
Jaco is still one of my favs, there;s no denying his ingenuity and passion. I recorded a Dixie Dregs show back around 1982 in which Jaco crashed onto the stage, full of ego and probably full of cocaine, he played with Steve and co. for a bit then left. Sadly the recording was stolen outta the high school parking lot months later.

MIchael Hedges had a great bassist accompanying him, again I'm bad with names ... lol ... but he had a very unique looking electric bass, very heavy and solid looking and sounding, wonder where he is now?.

Never heard of Frissel, seemd cool. I have some friends who swear by Morphine (2 String slide bass?) but for no good reason I never really think about them. I don't think I own anything by them, which is weird.

My former boss in my company is a huge Rush fan, and he borrowed me the live in Rio, which is quite good. But I don't like their sound of their 80s records, so I didn't look into any other records now. But if they are also interesting from a libertarian standpoint I will have to take another look. Thanks.

So far as I know everything he says is at least worth paying attention to in terms of music application and philosophy. As a producer, a recording artist (Big Black and Shellac), and a commentator helping other artists to really know what they are getting themselves into.
Oh and he is kick ass to watch live. I've seen Shellac play like 4 times, highly recommended. I just saw Wire this last weekend and they rocked though they didn't do much off of Pink Flag and Chairs missing. Still though, it's Wire and they are touring the US.
^ I am filled with envy. Shellac and Wire are soo good.
On the other hand, I saw Godspeed You Black Emperor a few weeks ago. Greatest show for a single band I have ever been to period.

I want to introduce a band that solved a big problem for me. I really like swing like Glenn Miller. The problem with Glenn Miller is, the sound is very poor. Yes this sound delivers its own vibe and feelings, and I can appreciate that. But I am a sound fetishist. And I luckily found the band Indigo Swing. They are great, have a look:
I really can recommend the records All Aboard and their first one titled after the band name. I only recently got "Red light" and I had not the time yet to listen to it, but I'm sure it’s great as well. Hope there is someone out there who needs swing in high class sound too ;)

In a recent post on Marginal Revolution, Alex T was thinking about *pop* bands that are accessible but (for whatever reason) never made it big.
That got me thinking about The Connells. They toured with REM. And at on one tour DMB was their opening act. But, for whatever reason, they never really took off.
I had never heard of them unitl a couple of years. But of friend of mine that grew up in Raleigh NC said they basically owned that town in the late 80s/early 90s. Here are a couple of their better songs I thought I would share.

Some things to consider though:
a) It honestly is a crapshoot industry; once you get past a certain point there is A LOT of luck
b) it is an awful industry, at least for many band trying to make it "big" - check out that Steve Albini link I had a few posts up for an idea of that
c) it is an over saturated industry ; there are way more bands now than there were 10 years ago and way more ways to get the music out cheaply
d) there are logistical nightmares that would make your head spin for non rich people who wish to stay together for a period of time
e) your local cover band makes 10 times more money than a touring band of musicians who play original music
