Interesting notes on the industry. I wonder if continuing rise of digital music will make it tougher or easier to "make it". On the one hand, you would think it might make it easier because you can share and advertise your music globally. But I know a lot of venues have been closing in my area due to low attendance (partially due, I am thinking, to the rise of personal music over the past 3 decades). So I would think that would make it harder to get your music out locally. I dunno.
Anyways, here is the MR post:

This is really tough to say, I think we are in the middle of a huge paradigm shift which hasn't settled yet. Plus there are odd ways to get music out there (amazon, rock band, etc) it is crazy to think about. If I had to speculate, maybe there will be more "bigish" cult following type bands and less national/international "star" type bands.

Interesting in my area (the Great Lakes) where the economy particularly sucks all the major venues I am used to are still there; the economy has been down so there is that - but the venues are still there.
Maybe it is just a weird regional thing, new local zoning/legislation, or simply a culture change. Or if you live in a college town that could be an issue (lots of hassles with those bars)

What the hell did I just watch?
What
lol its the intro to "sweet valley high". a tv show (based off the girl adventure books) that was on back in the early 90s.
for some reason it seemed apt
ZalRed:I have to agree with earlier posts, there is an interesting number of progressive fans (I count myself). I would be remiss if I did not mention King Crimson, with their legendary seven lineups and dozens of members. Rush goes without saying. I was on a folk metal kick for a while, and I noticed that skylien's avatar was the cover of Skyclad's "Folkemon," but I preferred their earlier stuff. Here's a sample of KC, for the curious prog fan. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mPlAr0Y62o

KC has some great songs although I don't have many records of them. But when you mentioned them I had the instant urge to listen to 21st century schizod man. Awesome song. And due to youtubing it I found a version with Maynard James Keenan from Tool... Nice version. According to the comments it is a colaboration with KC.
Yeah the old Skyclad records rock but I really like all records of Skyclad, also the ones since Martin Walkyier left. Have you tried their last record "In the all...together"?
And for the proggies: Try Disillusion with Fall.

I'm a big fan of electro. One of my favorite artists is Gary Numan
But this is epic too

This is a good one, I've been listening to Yeasayer a lot the last couple days.
Adele, Rolling in the Deep

Beautiful song.

The music business has been increasingly about image promotion as copyability has advanced. Simple composition is not a living these days. The money is made jumping around a stage with pyrotechnics, music videos that get TV ad ratings, etc.
Student: Adele, Rolling in the Deep http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYEDA3JcQqw Beautiful song. I prefer: VforVoluntary.com | Youtube.com/Nielsio | Reddit.com/r/austrian_economics | Post Points: 20
I listen to classic rock, some more recent rock, hip hop and rap, but mostly house music.
off topic but Joathan, what happened to your site? it used to be on my list of blogs that I would read daily...
My Blog: http://www.anarchico.net/
Production is 'anarchistic' - Ludwig von Mises
It was hacked and although I don't think anything was deleted, other than the index page, I decided to discontinue it. I have a free blogger I started, although there's only two posts (started it on Thursday). I'm really not sure if I'll be very active on it though (although, probably yes -- blogging is addicting).
Article form the Guardian on the new album Total--a remastered compolation of Joy Division and New Order material.

Apparently the band has come to hate each other so much they may not able to tour to promote it.
Kinda sad. :( I would give one ass cheek and sit sideways for the rest of my life to see one of their shows.
@Student
That sucks because i love joy division and new order...
I didnt want to start a new thread for this but:
Amy Winehouse is dead, at the age of 27... She joins the band of the dead 27 year olds: Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, and Janis Joplin...
Music tastes sometimes change over the years.
Started out with
Heavy Metal then Progressive Metal then Progressive Rock now Chillout Electronica what next? Light Jazz? But I have always listed to the classics during this whole period..... The Doors, Hendrix, Led Zepplin, David Bowie, Pink Floyd. Actually the 'music' to my ears of recent months had been the Mises Youtube videos they have on rotation on the homepage.

Despite Pitchfork having a bitch fit over Donald Glover's Camp album, I really dig some of his tunes.

Are two favs. :) Pitchfork is right that he wears his Kanye West influence on his sleeve. But he is hardly the only artist to do so (uh, Drake?) and I don't think music has to be breath takingly original to still be worth listening to (considering the indie rock bands Pitchfork typically louds I wouldn't think they prized originality very highly either).
A composer I've recently discovered... I play this and other pieces of his:

A few more Lucky Dube songs y'all might like -
Mickey Mouse Freedom
Soldier
Prisoner
Guns & Roses
War & Crime
We are the soldiers for righteousnessAnd we are not sent here by the politicians you drink with - L. Dube, rip
Nice songs Bert.
Moon, planets and stars:
Something I've been learning on guitar.
A band with some interesting meaning. The name is taken from the psuedonym of an author writing some political letters to the Public Advertiser, an 18th century English newspaper, about the government infringing their rights. Secondly, the album this particular song is from is inspired by the writings of Immanuel Velikovsky.
Also, the music is set over scenes from Frankenstein. It's pretty awesome. Typical shoegaze/post-rock stuff.
Bert do you listen to Burzum?
The Anarch is to the Anarchist what the Monarch is to the Monarchist. -Ernst Jünger
I'll listen to Burzum, but it's not something I'm big on, but I do like the music (haven't heard the new album yet). If Varg Vikernes wasn't such an idiot I'd probably like his band a bit more.
When it comes to black metal I find myself listening to more of the shoegaze/black metal stuff that's been coming out now (I've seen it called either hipster black metal or "blackgaze") or some DSBM (Coldworld, Sombres Forêts, Gris, etc.). Agalloch is one of my favorites if that says anything.
You're kind of right, but you're also misled a little. There are some punk bands that are into the whole collectivist state of mind: Refused comes to mind really quick. The first set of lyrics to their song Worm of the Senses is "I've got a bone to pick with capitalism, and a few to break."
But there are also some bands who might lean towards a Libertarian mindset, like the band Strike Anywhere. Russia Today did a 10 minute interview with the lead singer, where he said that they might be considered Left-leaning Libertarians. Anti-Flag also comes to mind. They seem to be a little more left oriented, but with Libertarian tendencies. I'm sure there are a ton of others, but it's really a mixed bag when it comes to punk.
This is fun question for me as I'm actually a composer of classical music. My favorite composers are Tchaikovsky, Chopin and Beethoven. I really love all music though, except some forms of rap that I've heard, which sound more like spoken poetry because its melody is quite monotone. I've never really heard a pro capitalist song. Musicians are usually romantics, but anyway good music is emotion, not logic, so capitalist music would proably sound horrible.
If anyone is interested I just started a youtube channel, that attempts to explain Austrian Economics in a humorous manner.
I am not sure whether anyone has tried to make this joke yet, but...
What music Austrians listen to?
That which maximizes their utility.
Right now this is maximizing my utility.
That's why libertarians are so angry all the time
I actually find this music rather uplifting. It all depends on context I suppose. Wolves in the Throne Room have a very positive and "spiritual" outlook on life that contrasts with other black metal bands. The same can be said of Agalloch. I don't expect everyone (or anyone) to understand the lyrics, but when I saw them live I was effin ecstatic they opened with this song.
The jagged lines in these wooden hands speak of a silent aeon below the depths of an austere ebon tide for centuries kingdoms have risen upon the ancient hands of a god once severed for the world's birth a sacrifice to the storms of life now darkness is thine sanctum Temples of magma steam across the grey The arc that transcends my iconic pride For I am not an ageless god, no, I am imprisoned by time These ancient palms shall once again be mine Hands...hands that lift the oceans to vertical depths above the stars For when I die, the universe will die with me and all will be lost forever gone Where am I? How long shall I suffer here? Forlorn in the cold neolithic embrace Forsaken deep in the sullen tide How long shall I suffer here? Perched on the cliffside gazing out into the brine My archaic beard pours downward and joins the feral sea I am the heritage; the quintessence of myth and legend The archetype of Pagan might and divinity Hands...hands that lift the oceans to vertical depths beyond the stars I gather a celestial blanket around these tired bones and finally slumber in the clouds of ice These are my hands... ...so it is done
That is a good joke Wheylous. I hope it catches on. It reminds me of the old joke of the 2 behavioralist who just had sex. After they were done, they both said to the other, "It was good for you; how was it for me?"
Pssst...Not the correct thread for self-promotion. If you'd like, start a new thread.
I don't mean any harm by it. I just want to attract people from various forums and various points of view together for discussion. This video is on free trade and I'm making these to help promote Ron Paul. I'm not looking for any monetary gain and I just put it at the end of my post to give people the option. I'm not looking for money, nor am I forcing anyone to do what they do not want to. Is my one sentence really such an eyesore?
I couldn't access your channel actually
all I got was the typical Server 500 error
