I figured this should go here. Given that today is Reagan's 100th birthday, I posted an article from LRC by Rothbard on Reagan on Facebook. This is what happened:

- In honor of Reagan's 100th birthday: http://www.lewrockwell.com/rothbard/rothbard60.html

-- do you hate all of society or just the united states

-Where'd you gather that from?

--your general disposition towards all things american

-Such as?

--the government, for one. reagan was a good president. the writing of executive order 12333 was single handedly the most important event in the history of national security, followed closely by his general stance on the advantages of nuclear nonproliferation. his public speaking skills were great and he accomplished more with alzheimers than most people can do with a ph.d. voted him in twice for a reason, killer

-Not to mention California's budget growing by 122% while he was governor of California, the false libertarian ideals followed by statist actions, a 22% growth of the California bureaucracy (despite him saying he crushed the bureaucracy), th...e increased taxes and deficits as president (especially for the middle class due to the ever-awful inflation tax - good to know for when we heard "Reagan cut taxes!"), restricted at least 25% of imports by the time he left office, increased fed. spending by 53%, lowered the value of the dollar, escalated the war on drugs (so much for being a liberty-minded president), and the list goes on. Furthermore, the fact that he was voted in twice speaks nothing of his success as a president. The vast majority of the electorate is ignorant and votes on who they'd rather have a beer with rather than what is fundamentally good for them. It's not a very good yardstick.

--the fact that you put that much effort into a facebook post should embarass you. this is a social network, not a paragraph-form anarchist blog

-Wasn't much effort. But good job ignoring what I said.

--i got the jist of it. you blame reagan, single-handedly, for the entire economic downturn of the 80's.

-A lot of his rhetoric evolved around pursuing small government, minarchist libertarian principles, and free markets. His actions show otherwise. That was the point. I said nothing of blaming him single-handedly for the economic conditions in the 80s, although he certainly did play a part.

--if you name one government official in all of recorded history, aside from maybe adolf hitler, that did everything he said, ill give you a dollar

-Why would I do that?

--because you cant, which just exacerbates the fact that youre nothing but a sour anarchist with a serious stiffy for old white dudes in suits

-Thanks for answering my question for me. I don't really see what the point is, though. And great job on the personal attacks.

--that is an answer, you said why, i gave you a reason. and its not a personal attack, its clearly a fact. all you do is bitch and moan about government, good luck getting a job as a polisci major

-I asked what the point of me being able (or not) to name a politician who put every promise into action was. Also, facts have the tendency of being objective. The claim that I'm a "sour anarchist with a stiffy for old white dudes in suits" ...is purely subjective, and thus not a fact. And I'm glad you mentioned my major. I've been considering changing to something in the sciences.

--subjective or not, reality is reality. keep that in mind

-Subjectivity doesn't sort of play a role in determining what is reality, in that it doesn't help much until it's moved closer to objectivity. Keep that in mind.

--when youre an adult and you look back at your little "acting out" phase, i hope you remember how full of yourself that you were

-I'm not quite sure how posting an article criticizing Reagan and remaining what I consider to be fairly respectful in the face of hostility means I'm "acting out" or that I'm "full of myself."

--im not being hostile, i have absolutely no hard feelings towards you, i just think you could use a new pair of glasses

-The feeling is mutual.

--fair enough

Unfortunately this is how most of my infrequent conversations with this guy go. I think they should become even more infrequent.

Blueline, if they're going to lead you around like that you need to constantly recap and remind them that you're winning. You can't let them change the subject. You do it a couple of times but if you persisted, the ending to the conversation would have been less lame. In all liklihood, he would have had to give up and just stop posting altogether. Even if he had said something like "Hurr durr I'm done with this conversation", you should still reply "Well I've expertly answered all your objections and defended why a free market advocate might negatively view RR. So yes you are done with this conversation."

Indeed. I find myself being led to different topics than the one being discussed all the time, and while I can sometimes realize "alright, this has nothing to do with the original topic," there are too many times when I don't. It's something I need to work on.

Though if I had to make up an excuse for not being focused: I think I just wanted to have a bit of fun with him, heh.

I made some Mises 4komas.

There are a lot of in-jokes here.  Like Mises liked opera, his brother was a famous mathematician, Murray wasn't so good with spending habits, the story of Mises talking about the empiricists in Vienna, Mises had a very large personal library, the kind of music Jeffrey Tucker and Walter Block like, Doug French's opinion on charities, Jeffrey Tucker's opinion on microlending, who Bettina Bien Greaves was, etc..

Haha, I'm glad you can have fun doing that. Whenever I get into internet arguments about politics I get so mad. I focus on keep asking them questions they can't answer, and, just like was stated above, reminding them that they're losing and that they still haven't answered the original question. Otherwise you start answering their questions, they bring tangents into the mix, etc. In my opinion, it's so much more fun making people look stupid in person when there's an audience.

I made some Mises 4komas.

Clicking the top link came up with a computer virus. I don't know if it's just me.

I had a strange reflex reaction, Libertyandlife. The moment I heard "libertarians", I closed the video.

I never realized it, but I really hate that word. It's an annoying, annoying, and stupid word. Why can't they just call themselves liberal, or maybe not even call themselves anything?

Libertarian is a much more defined word. Liberal is so abstract. Plus, whenever you say 'liberal' in the United States, it usually means 'progressive'.

Just a couple things I saw on Google News today that made me facepalm:

"To understand President Obama's speech to the US Chamber of Commerce Monday morning, it's helpful to think of the president as an aggrieved parent and the business community as the teenager who's sick and tired of the rules of the house."

My reaction: FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF--

It's things like this that diminish my hope for humanity.

Yeah, same here. I can't believe all of the propaganda I've been fed from capitalist roaders all these years!

My favorite part is when it says, "China became the first country in the world to successfully synthesize insulin", and my next favorite part was looking on Wikipedia to find "the first synthetic insulin was produced simultaneously in the labs of Panayotis Katsoyannis at the University of Pittsburgh and Helmut Zahn at RWTH Aachen University in the early 1960s".

Did you post this because it's scary and stupid, or because you agree? Seems like just another leftist finite-earther rambling on about a solar economy.

There is obviously much that can and will be learned from nature. Who can disagree with that?
I would think that argument could only arise if someone was to suppose that government should intervene to 'promote' or 'guide' such projects.

That's always what they're implying. When was the last time you heard a leftist say, "it's crucial to get off fossil fuels and start a solar economy and we're going to do this with the free market"? No, they're always talking about some huge social engineering project. Socialism for the earth.
