i looked, but unfortunately my university's online resources only give newsweek archives back to 1998. Sorry =(

Wow...Newsweek itself only keeps archives from 1982 and newer.

I work very close to their office and I know people who used to work for the magazine who might be able to advise me where to look and who to ask. 

I will give it a shot.
