Here's a fun one I was reminded of by this thread where Paul Krugman lists his top 5 econ books.  In this interview below, he discusses the one that ranks at the top of his list.  Krugman basically provides an explanation for everything about the way he is in less than 90 seconds..

And here's a nice supplement from his own New York Times.

China's communists mark 90th, hail party's success

Excerpt: [Chinese President] Hu glossed over the radical campaigns and policies that led to tens of millions of deaths in the first decades of communist rule. But he said the party endured because it learned from its mistakes.

Pope denounces commodities speculation

Excerpt: Pope Benedict XVI denounced speculation in commodities markets Friday and demanded a global response to high food prices based on solidarity, not profit . . . Benedict's call echoed the argument laid out in his last encyclical "Charity in Truth," which denounced the profit-at-all cost mentality blamed for the global economic downturn.

Clinton outlines road ahead for Arab democracy

Excerpt: U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Friday that the rule of law, political parties and democratic institutions must emerge in the Arab world if it is to emulate Eastern Europe's remarkable transition two decades ago from authoritarianism to truly free societies.

I suggest the people in the Middle East read the introduction to Democracy: The God That Failed.

Glenn Beck has last Fox News Channel show

Excerpt: Fox will air a John Stossel special on Friday and a week of Beck reruns before launching a summertime replacement series, "The Five." It will include a rotating crew of Fox personalities like Andrew Napolitano, Geraldo Rivera, Juan Williams, Monica Crowley and Eric Bolling debating issues of the day.

'The Great' Henry Hazlitt

I love this interview because Hazlitt says it best what Conservatives really do. Most claim they want to decentralize governments, but in reality, they just keep governments big. As Hazlitt says (paraphrasing the quote), "[Conservatives] claim to administer their socialistic policies better because they dont believe in it"

I only listened to a couple of minutes but the whole topic/segment setup reminds me of the Coffee Party nonsense...basically a way for Leftists to get together and talk about nothing and try to make each other feel better...

Just happen to be watching John Stossel today and he's talking about how much government assistance American Indians have gotten and are getting. The Director of the Indian Trust (I think that's what it's called) said that the reason that Indians are poor is that the United States has neglected them after being asked why it was that the Amish and the Mormons do just fine.

That most American of games, basketball, is literally following the money to China.

http://msn.foxsports.com/nba/story/Kobe-Bryant-ponders-China-tour-if-NBA-lockout-is-prolonged-070411

An extended NBA lockout could bring China's basketball fans a barnstorming tour featuring one of the game's brightest stars, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday, citing various reports.

While NBA team owners and the players' union battle over how to split the league's roughly $4 billion worth of revenue, Kobe Bryant was said to be considering an exhibition tour in China, where his jersey has long been the number one seller.

Other stars also thinking of joining.

Naismith was Canadian.  I always thought baseball was the synonymous-with-America sport. (Although, you do have a point that other countries are actually decent at baseball, whereas America dominates basketball).

But the Chinese have always loved basketball.  I remember hearing years ago about a survey done asking Chinese to name a famous American.  The #2 response was Thomas Edison.  Number 1: Michael Jordan.

A libertarian hate-piece (ok, harsh term, but there is some strawman-building done) by Jonah Goldberg that I found linked under the Wikipedia section of "criticism of Libertarianism":

Just a note on that John Stossel video.

It is a pretty popular complaint among libertarians that poor management of forests have been the primary cause of increases in forest fire activity. Of course, this argument is very hard to support with data (notice he quotes no study supporting his assertions). In fact, the most recent evidence suggests climate change carries most of the blame. For example, here is Westerling's 2006 article in Science on how warming and earlier springs have increases western U.S. wildfire actvitiy.

http://www.sciencemag.org/content/313/5789/940.short

He concludes:

"ecological restoration and fuels management alone will not be sufficient to reverse current wildfire trends."

As far as U.S. policy toward Native Americans, I doubt you will find many defenders. Of course, improving the position of native people is pretty low on everyone's priority list, including that of most libertarian think tanks. For example, maybe Jeff Tucker could write more op-eds about the plight of people living on reservations and less op-eds about how the jackboot of the state is keeping his clothes dirty through phosphorus restrictions.

Just a thought.

It's okay. Explitives are often used as substitues for evidence. So I can dig it.

Did you miss the link?  It was meant to illustrate the fact that everything down to the length of your nose hair has been blamed on global warming, so it's not exactly surprising that forest fires are included in that list...which is also to say, I'm not exactly sure how many people are very convinced by the "it's because of global warming" argument these days...regardless of the question.

Oh that was indeed an excellent piece of evidence that was well researched. After all, it includes links from sources as authoritative as treehugger.com (citing their scientific claim that global warming will lead to World War 4) and the daily mail (I often catch up on news about climate change and Fergie there). And collecting all these links together certainly proves.....something....I'm sure.

Unfortunately, I am not interested in debating your bold and original positions on global climate change.

What would interest me more (and would be more relevant to John Stossel's video) would be if you could point to what peer-reviewed study was underlying John Stossel's assertions about poor forest management and wild fires. He mentioned none, which is odd because he normally loves to interview economists or scientists supporting his position. Maybe you can help point in a better direction?

Maybe Jeff Tucker could write more op-eds about the plight of these Americans and less op-eds about how the jackboot of the state is keeping his clothes dirty through phosphorus restrictions.

There's not a lot of original contribution to be made on the subject of Native Americans. Basically, this is the situation: the US government and early settlers lied, cheated and stole the vast majority of land which the Native Americans relinquished. Most of the wrongs committed cannot now be reversed due to the passage of time and the death of witnesses (and there's not a lot of physical/contractual evidence for most claims). The US government has now put the Native Americans who want to remain in the vestiges of their one-time culture (aka reservations) on the public dole to keep them sedated and docile.

This is all really horrible stuff and the Rothbardian remedy is blunt and extreme: elminate the monopoly of law held by US courts, permit the US government or other illegitimate landholders to be sued in courts other than US government courts, restore territories for which it can be proven they were stolen through force, fraud or both and liquidate whatever US government or private assets are necessary to satisfy these legal damages. What is there left to editorialize on?

@Clayton-

...or just stop welfare to the reservations and let the Native Americans live their own lives. I think, to some extent, they really need to let go and evolve--culturally that is.

That's never stopped anyone at LvMI from editorializing on abolishing the Fed. Does the case really change that often?

The benefit of editorializing isn't original contribution (that's what scientific research is for), the benefit of editorials is to make the case and raise awarness. IOW: Its about PERSUASION--changing people's minds.

Of course, that is only really a benefit if you actually care about the subject. If you're just using Native Americans as an easy, emotional political prop to tug at the heart strings and further your ideology as a whole (US is bad indians => abolish the entire DOI????? huh???) maybe you DON'T need to write about them so often.

So write about the govts war on clean shirts instead. Much more fun. So much less depressing.
