The space programs actually had several goals. First was to develop planetary defense missiles. This had the added benefit of being able to hit a country on the other side of the planet with the explosives too, but the primary motive was the slight probability of hostile extraterrestrial contact. The third major goal was simply the greatest reconnaissance campaign in human history. We had to check out the moon. This provided a great cover story to explain all the money ("it's science, you guys") and make everything seem nonthreatening even though we were talking about all sorts of wars here. The communists were definitely a threat, and therefore useful to detract from the primary goal: making sure earth stayed on earth's side.
You think the main purpose of the space program was to defend from aliens?
I wouldnt say it's a "belief." more like an estimate.
This seems like a very nice website refuting many environmental fallacies:

I have not yet read all of it, but from the articles I did read it had quality stuff.
No, the space program was just a continuation of the Nazi V-2 program under a different guise (borrowed from Jules Verne). The more you pry into history, the more you realize that the official narrative of many extremely suspicious events is quite shaky. The Lusitania was likely a false flag operation. The Titanic (actually, the Olympic) was intentionally scuttled. I'm beginning to believe that Hiroshima and Nagasaki may have been faked. JFK was not shot by a lone-nut assassin. The Moon landings were probably faked.
When you take all the chicanery and lies into account, you realize that the stated goals of these programs could not possibly be further from the truth. These programs all have one and only one very terrestrial purpose: start wars, scare the shit out of people and keep them in awe of their government so they'll shut up and pay taxes like good little serfs.

Its highly unlikely that the moon landings were faked. And why wouldnt the government take this opportunity to investigate transient lunar phenomena?

In an exchange of letters between the billionaire investor and a Republican congressman that Buffett sent the committee this week, Buffett is offering to release his federal tax returns — with a condition.
"If you could get other ultra rich Americans to publish their returns along with mine, that would be very useful to the tax dialogue and intelligent reform," Buffett wrote.

As James and Wheylous noted, a 1%er refers to a member of an outlaw bike gang. The name comes from the fact that allegedly only 1% of all bike gangs are outlaws versus the common perception that anyone with a bike is neccesarily bad.
You can imagine the humor this makes for when you hear the Occupiers complaining about the 1% percent.
