@Whelyous: I'd like to see the wording on that UNICEF survey. I mean, I also believe that under certain circumstances, a husband is justified in hitting his wife... that is, only in self-defense against an assault. In particular, I am suspicious of the data-point that fully one-third of Indian women in the wealthiest quintile responded that they believe a husband is justified to hit his wife under certain circumstances. If you've ever met an Indian woman in the wealthiest quintile in India, you'll understand my skepticism.

We have to keep in mind that the richest quintile in India is 250 million people. I found this: "even urban India alone has no middle class; everyone at over $10 a day is in the top 5% of the country." Maybe, when picturing rich indian women, we have the richest ten million or so in mind, not the typical person in the richest quintile. Also, this tolerance of domestic violence might be a particular problem of Indian culture.
That being said, the point of that graph really wasn't the particular number of women tolerant of domestic violence, it was that the percentages line up with income, both within countries and in comparison between countries. We could rephrase the question or ask something similar, and still get the same correlation. This shows that gender equality is really just a side-effect of wealth, i.e. free markets, not of "feminism".
Well, I sort of agree, but I wasn't the one who brought it up :P

Causation/correlation much? So many confounding variables...

Freedom4Me73986 please stop posting things from years ago. Unless it is extremely relevant or likely that we might not have seen it, just dont' post it. Why do you think a 2010 report on rfid from sky news is something that I would like to see ?
I think it goes without saying, I'm with Clayton and Jack on this.

Sheldon Richman on government: The idea that "the purpose" of government is or ever was the protection of rights is a fetter on the libertarian mind, holding it back from embracing the full logical implications of its premises. As earlier libertarians understood, the purpose of the State was/is the exploitation of honest labor (including that performed by entrepreneurs).
Here's a little play 'proof' I came up with. I doubt it's useful for anything but I like touching over it in my head. I know it's not neat.
1a. The way towards profits in a business are guided by cost-accounting and revenue.
1b. The way towards profits in a state agency are guided by increased revenue.
2a. Granting cost-accounting, businesses profit by expanding clientelle.
2b. State agencies profit by expanding input.
3. When society deems that a problem is to be fixed by the state, the state allocates resources toward corresponding agency.
4a. The expansion of business' clientelle is necessarily fixed to increased satisfaction.
4b. The expansion of State agency is fixed to however important society deems a problem to be.
5a. Business' have the incentive to increase satisfaction.
5b. State agencies have the incentive to decrease satisfaction, to increase the direness of a problem.
