Seeking to protect women from exploitation, Canada is ending visas for foreign strippers, reports theGlobe and Mail. Foreign escorts and massage parlor workers will also be banned. The government says the move is to combat human trafficking but critics say the ruling Conservative Party is just being prudish. The government has issued 496 visas to exotic dancers since 2006, though just 12 were issued last year. There are about 700 foreign strippers currently working in the country, but they won't be allowed to renew their one-year visas when they expire.
"The government cannot in good conscience continue to admit temporary foreign workers to work in businesses in sectors where there are reasonable grounds to suspect a risk of sexual exploitation," says Canada's immigration minister. But advocates for the adult entertainment industry say that as long as those jobs are legal in Canada, the government is discriminating against valid workers. "They’re destroying the industry by creating a labor shortage," says a spokesman for the Adult Entertainment Association of Canada, adding that strip clubs will probably end up recruiting foreign students, who are allowed to work part-time. "The word exotic means foreign, and that’s what people want to see," he says.
Interesting that no one thinks to point out the interest that domestic strippers might have in limiting competition from entering their field.
My brother made the comment to me that it is at least partially true that many of these foreign strippers are basically sex slaves, though I have not verified this for myself. In either case, I was quick to point out that even if this assertion was true, then these "sex slaves" will now be working a lot more prostitution in their homeland to make up for their lost stripping income from the lack of visas granted to foreign dancers.
I mean, It's not as if someone who is the kind of person to kidnap women and force them into sex slavery isn't willing to force it on these women in their homeland just because they can't get a visa into Canada.
If it is so important to get them out of the country, why not just take them somewhere else? America or some other country?
I am no expert on the black market of modern slavery, or sex slavery. Is there even a half-truth in the argument that this could in anyway produce a positive externality for these women? It seems highly unlikely.

I'm not sure it will help any more than banning foreign children would stop child abuse.

It's this type of thinking that separates libertarians from non-libertarians. Good point.
