Don't know if anybody else noticed, but the first batch of Leonard Read books that have been converted to ebook have finally been released by LvMI.  Kind of disappointing that they couldn't get some unique cover artwork for each of the books, but at least they got them out there.  They are sorely needed.

Great, which book is his seminal work, or should one read first?

All of the Leonard Read EPUBs should be posted over the coming week/s, they are just awaiting eISBNs/covers.  I have them all up on my site if you are impatient:

http://misesbooks.blogspot.com

All of these books will be posted:

Read,Leonard.E.-.Accent.On.The.Right.epub
Read,Leonard.E.-.Awake.For.Freedom's.Sake.epub
Read,Leonard.E.-.Castles.In.The.Air.epub
Read,Leonard.E.-.Comes.The.Dawn.epub
Read,Leonard.E.-.Deeper.Than.You.Think.epub
Read,Leonard.E.-.Having.My.Way.epub
Read,Leonard.E.-.How.Do.We.Know.epub
Read,Leonard.E.-.Let.Freedom.Reign.epub
Read,Leonard.E.-.Liberty.-.Legacy.of.Truth.epub

Read,Leonard.E.-.To.Free.Or.Freeze.epub
Read,Leonard.E.-.Vision.epub
Read,Leonard.E.-.Who's.Listening.epub
Read,Leonard.E.-.Why.Not.Try.Freedom.epub

These will not be posted (but are on my site):

Read,Leonard.E.-.Government.-.An.Ideal.Concept.epub
Read,Leonard.E.-.Pattern.For.Revolt
Read,Leonard.E.-.Romance.of.Reality

As a side note, the covers of the 01/10/13 EPUBs were accidentally added in wrongly. There will be fixed EPUBs being updated this some time this week (correct versions can always be grabbed from my site).

Got a nice fancy cover for Castles In The Air though.  It was probably because I submitted all of these Leonard Read EPUBs  in one huge batch instead of one by one as usual. Usually my pace is ~1 book a week, but these books converted very quickly (because they were short, and had great scans). :)

myhumangetsme:

........ FINALLY ......

Any other EPUBs you would like to see?  As of right now, I mostly just pick and choose (somewhat randomly).  If anyone has recommendations I try to move those to the top of the list.

Well these are the two PDFs of his books on Mises (without EPUBs):

https://www.mises.org/document/3063/Economic-Doctrine-and-Method-An-Historical-Sketch
Schumpeter,Joseph.-.Ten.Great.Economists.-.From.Marx.To.Keynes (can't find a link for this, but I have the PDF sitting on my hard drive)

And this little 8 page PDF:

https://www.mises.org/document/3862/Methodological-Individualism

The two books look to be dense, with lots of footnotes (footnotes REALLY slow down the conversion).  The scans themselves look clean, so it should not be too bad.  It might take perhaps two weeks each, but I will be sure to move them up towards the top of my list.

I am mostly focusing on works which are hosted in the Mises Literature section.  I can't seem to find those two books, although I may be missing something.  If not, if you point me to the best PDF version you can find, I can ask around and see if there is a reason it is not being hosted on the site.  I would not mind tossing those two books on the backburner if it won't delay my other projects too much.

Also, according to Wikipedia, Leonard Read has written these works. I am on the hunt for these, and I cannot find them anywhere:

I'd Push the Button (New York: Joseph D. McGuire, 1946)
    Outlook for Freedom (FEE, 1951)
Where Lies This Fault? (FEE, 1967)
    Instead of Violence (FEE, 1973)
    Free Man's Almanac (FEE, 1974)
Thoughts Rule the World (FEE, 1981)

I made a nice post full of books and the links to those books, and the forum software flagged it for moderator approval....we can see how that's gone.  Maybe one day they'll approve it and you can see what I actually put (thanks mods!), but until then here's a much more brief list:

Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace

Elementary Lessons in Logic

Confessions of a Capitalist

The Writings of F. A. Harper, Volume 1: The Major Works

The Writings of F. A. Harper, Volume 2: Shorter Essays

The Social and Political Philosophy of Adam Ferguson: A Commentary on his Essay on the History of Civil Society

The Counter-Revolution of Science

Thank you.  It is quite a "thankless" job though.  There are not many comments either positive or negative, and it is great knowing that there are at least SOME people who appreciate the EPUBs.  When I see topics such as this, it really puts a huge boost in my morale.

Converting these books into EPUB means they can be comfortably read in whatever the user feels is more preferable, and can also be easily changed into any future formats which crop up (PDF is just about THE WORST format).  This will indirectly help spread the ideas more than before, and will allow them to continue to be read any place on any device until time immemorial!

I am just doing my part to make it easier for everyone to read the great works.

fegeldolfy:

Capitalism,Socialism,and Democracy

History of Economic Analysis

Hmmm... seems like these two PDFs seem to have been built from a digital source already.  Plus, these two editions are newer and will most likely be mired in some copyright.

I feel like my time is better spent on books which have never seen the light of HTML/EPUB/MOBI/non-PDF.

I will put these on the far end of the list though.  Maybe there might be a quicker way I can just strip the text right out of them.

fegeldolfy:
The Pure Theory of Capital

I started work on this one in April 2011 (one of the first ones I tried to create), and it was way out of my league.  I haven't looked back at it since then, but I assume I will have to scratch most of my work and start over.  This one will most likely take weeks of work.

myhumangetsme:
Elementary Lessons in Logic

I started this one in November 2011, but got overwhelemed.

I will have to take another look at this one + Pure Theory of Capital.  My skills have gotten much better since then.

myhumangetsme:

I know that game.  A few of my "Book Typo" posts get flagged because I post lots of links to the Wiki.  I think the limit might be around 5 or 6 links.  As long as I get the name of the book + author, that should be fine, I would only need links to works off of the Mises Literature section.

I already have every PDF book downloaded/sorted on my hard drive so I can find them easily.

myhumangetsme:
Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace

I finished this one June 2012, I guess I forgot to put it up on my site.  I just did a few more quick tweaks right now, but it is definitely not up to my standards nowadays (although it is already vastly superior to any other copy you will find online... because there is none). :D

I might be able to do you one better, as I was already in the process of converting it from a PDF to a Word document anyway (done with the book itself, converting the footnotes).  I got it from here, and although not a LvMI book it is one of the more highly discussed books by Hayek in LvMI circles and would definitely be a good addition.

Are you telling me you already have a Word document that is corrected from typos (or that you just copied/pasted, or used some sort of converter, or built off of the Internet Archive's auto generated stuff)?  Does it have all the proper unicode characters in there too? I know that Hayek likes to use a lot of greek symbols (which are a pain in the butt to hunt down one by one).

Going from ANYTHING BESIDES PDF -> EPUB is a million times easier than going from PDF -> EPUB.... but only if the ANYTHING is not some auto generated junk full of mistakes. :)

All typos that I know of I have corrected, yes, I've even tried to preserve some of the original words (e.g., rôle instead of role).  I have used proper Unicode chars to the best of my ability, and tried to use the original spacings and italics as used in the book.  Greek symbols weren't as hard as they look, although one important sentence in Greek I couldn't find all of the characters for (but luckily it was footnoted so I just used the English translation of it).

As soon as I finish up with it I'll upload it somewhere where you can get it if you'd like to have it.

I usually just visit Wikipedia and copy/paste characters:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_alphabet

This is the other site that I use for finding any character.  I love this site because if I run into a character, I can copy/paste it into the box, and it will tell me exactly what it is.  In this case, I used it to find out an acute was being used instead of an apostrophe:

http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/search.htm?q=%C2%B4&preview=entity

In the box you can also type anything, and it will search every unicode character for anything that matches.  I typed in "greek" and this is what it gets:

http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/search.htm?q=greek&preview=entity

That site is also great because I can see every unicode character possible, even all the greek symbols with all the crazy accents on them.  Then I just find the one that matches and copy/paste it.

Great, yes I would like to have it.  Then I can convert it and run some comparisons, to try to catch even more typos/corrections.

EPUB of "The State, The Enemy" by Sir Ernest Benn that I just completed:

http://misesbooks.blogspot.com/2013/01/the-state-enemy-by-sir-ernest-benn.html

I also cleaned up a lot of the markings in the PDF. If anyone is interested in reading the cleaned PDF version, just let me know, and I can generate it and upload it. (No idea why you would want to read that inferior format though!) :D

I have fallen WAY behind on my reading of Human Action... I am going through very thoroughly and cleaning up every last typo (hundreds of fixes so far).  Last time I fixed a typo was September 21st, 2012... I maybe read 10 pages since then:

Now the rest of these books will be slow going.  It looks like they are longer, the text will not OCR as well, and some of these have some serious markings which will take time to clean.

If you're looking for some softballs to convert in the collection, I found a couple others that would be great:

Is the LvMI cheaping out on their press productions?  They have a PRINT TO ORDER section of their catalog, but they won't sell the JB Say books that they used to have.  They don't have as many Liberty Fund books, Schumpeter's C,S,& D isn't available anymore, Mencken is gone, those silver rounds are wildly overpriced, etc.

They aren't in fincancial trouble are they?  That'd be pretty...embarrassing.

I spent TONS of hours fixing typos, and tweaking lots of things in that one (I would estimate at least ~8000 fixes (that is how many LINES of code I tweaked, there could have been multiple tweaks per line))............. I just completed Benjamin Tucker's "Indvidiual Liberty" (with a cleaned PDF version as well, ~50% of the file size):

I asked, and was told that those physical books sold extremely poorly.  The Institute was losing money on each of those books, so they have been removed.

John James:

I was tempted to get in contact with Boldrin/Levine when the book first came out, and see if I could get my hands on the source documents.

Now that I am looking, I can't seem to find an EPUB version of the book, which is sad, but there is an official Kindle version:

http://www.amazon.com/Against-Intellectual-Monopoly-ebook/dp/B001E9731A/

It would be a better use of my time to go from $16.99 MOBI -> EPUB (few hours of work), than to work backwards from the PDF (potentially tens of hours, errors introduced in the process).

Hey,I found Say's "Letters to Mr.Malthus" and "Treatise on Political Economy" on libertyfund, so you don't have to do those ones (I think I requested them earlier).

Tex2002ans:
I was tempted to get in contact with Boldrin/Levine when the book first came out, and see if I could get my hands on the source documents.

I've actually been able to converse with Levine through email, and he was quite accomodating.  I'd definitely reach out to him.  You're doing great work with all this.  I think he'd be enthusiastic to help in any way he can, especially in support of his own work.

Mind giving me a link?  Perhaps I can work from their version and make it better/more accurate to the original.

I will type up an email later tonight, and keep everyone up to date on what happens.
