Well, because I finally saw someone (Dave) bring it up, I'm curious as to what people think about the absurd number of supposed "guests" this forum gets on a regular basis. Currently the forum says that we have 4K guests online... For some reason I don't think that this is the case. Does anyone know what this forum considers a "view" or how long it lasts for? Or maybe we are just the most hoppin forum on the internet and we don't even know it...

My guess is that it's a couple dozen lurkers, a dozen search engine crawlers, a dozen data miner crawlers, and the remainder are spam bots.

Why doesn't Wheylous's forum have these?

I know that search engine crawlers are bots used by websites in order to find new websites and link them over to google and other search engines, so that the forum posts can be found.

Data miner crawlers are probably used to gather other information from the World Wide Web.

Spam bots? He's not using Telligent.

As eliotn was saying, the search engine crawlers crawl a web page to index it. The data miner crawlers are either gathering data some random project in which a university or a startup may be engaged, or the feds gathering data.
