I`m interested in rebel music. Songs of rebellions, anti-recruiting songs, protest songs, or just breaking-a-foolish-law or making fun of some government institution songs.

Stuff like for example:

Irish Soldier Laddie:

The Rising of the Moon:

Arthur McBride:

Johnny I Hardly Knew Ya:

Connaugh Rangers:

The Moonshiner:

Please share links, lyrics or just song titles if you have any of this seditious type of music!

if you're in to the folksy sort of stuff, look up Manu Chao  for song called "Politik Kills".  Chao is a (i think) french-Catalan, a region that has a strong separatist movement.

Although many fans think they've sold out, some early Offspring like "Kill the President" might be what you're looking for.

Just about anything by Anti-flag fits the bill: 1 Trillion Dollars, Anatomy of Your Enemy, oh, what the hell - here is a youtubes for the acoustic version of "1984":

Some Rise Against is good from time-to-time.

There is a lot of metal and early punk that is pretty anti-establishment (I'm thinking of The Exploited, &c.,)

Of course, depending on your musical tastes, your mileage may vary.  I tried to link to songs with a pretty solid message behind the lyrics.

The problem is that most anti state music is atrocious.

May not be exactly what you're looking for, but one of my favorite songs is Warrior Poet by The Classic Crime

It couldn't be more far from the truth
If you could do to me the things you would do
And I know you're on to me
I'm watching you wanting me
You hunt down the rebels and punish them wrongfully
You came with fire and weapons to kill

A warrior poet once said
You're not dead yet so live like you could be
A warrior poet said
Have no regrets when you're old
Have no regrets when you're old

I'm not looking for you to be anything
But my ultimate enemy
So back off, you're not what I would prefer to see
When my body rots I still won't give you the courtesy
You came with fire for the last time

A warrior poet once said
You're not dead yet so live like you could be
A warrior poet said
Have no regrets when you're old
Have no regrets when you're old

When your body wants to run
But your heart knows you're better than that
The blood you spilled on battlefields
I promise you will not go unspent
Neither will I leave you stranded
The promise rings as our battle cry
You're never alone regardless of doubt
But faith comes so easy to some
Better luck next time, better luck next time
Watch as the teargas burns my eyes
It burns my eyes

A warrior poet once said
You're not dead yet so live like you could be
A warrior poet said
Have no regrets when you're old
Have no regrets when you're

Reggae, reggae, and reggae. Reggae (especially white boy american reggae) is by far the most quasi-libertarian music genre you'll ever find.  Jamaican reggae is often weird and anti-capitalist. But here in the states, reggae is extremely anti-big brother, occasionally anti-capitalist (but can be interpreted as state-capitalism and corporatism), but thats rare. When the songs are politically-motivated, they usually deal with subjects of being anti-war, anti-drug war, anti-tax, pro-independence, and pro-freedom and liberty for all, etc...

Here are some of my favorite Reggae bands

Arden Park Roots, B foundation, Ballyhoo!, Can't Hang, Cipes and the People, Close Enough, Daniel Wesley, Dirty Heads, Dispatch, Doug Means Project, Echo Movement, Freeflow, G. Love, Indofin, Live@subs, Long Beach Dub Allstars, Long Beach Short Bus, Mike Pinto, OPM, P-Nuckle, Passafire, Pepper, Ribsy's Nickel, Roots of Creation, Scotty Don't, Starving Millionaires, State Radio, Sublime, Three legged Fox, Tomorrows Bad Seeds, Trolls Cottage, 3rd Alley, and 311. (Some are more or less politically-motivated, and some are more or less libertarian.)

Thank You - Brandon

Hi Marko,

First thing I think of in this area is the Sex Pistols' "Never Mind the Bollocks" LP.

I think anyone of a certain mindset can relate to the sentiments expressed in "Anarchy in the UK" and "G-d save the Queen", regardless of their nationality.

In the area of anti-war and anti-recruitment, two songs (at least as I understand them) come to mind:

Black Sabbath - "War Pigs".

The Clash - "The Call Up".

I will have to listen to some more of the ones already posted here. By the way, Marko, is "Irish Soldier Laddie" an anti-war song, or more of a call up to fight against the British?

Rage Against the Machine has plenty of songs about rebellion, though normally they mix in their Marxism, so that may not be exactly what you are looking for.

Blisters and Coffee by The Classic Crime

A showdown at dusk,
This old town is lost,
I’m flat on my back
And I can’t see through the dust.

But you never told me that I was worthy,
You didn’t let me live just to hurt me.

Desperate
We will lift up our hands.
Stronger
We will rise up against.
Freedom
Is a part of us all
its time to let it go.
Desperate
We will lift up our hands.
Stronger
We will rise up against.
Freedom
Is a part of us all
its time to let it go.

What happens now when I walk out of town?
And the enemy surrounds me bent on hunting me down?
I’ll be moving silent while the enemy sleeps,
I’ll show no mercy like the first time when they came after me.

You’ll never catch me.
You’ll never own me.
Out on this lonely landscape I am free

Desperate
We will lift up our hands.
Stronger
We will rise up against.
Freedom
It’s a part of us all
It’s time to let it go.
Desperate
We will lift up our hands.
Stronger
We will rise up against.
Freedom
It’s a part of us all
It’s time to let it go.

I guess we figured it out.
One by one we’re picking them off.
I guess we figured it out.
One by one we’re picking them off.
I guess we figured it out.
One by one we’re picking them off.

Desperate
We will lift up our hands.
Stronger
We will rise up against.
Freedom
It’s a part of us all
It’s time to let it go.

Rush is the primary libertarian flavoured band I know of, but this isn't exactly what you're after. Deathstars  has some pretty "smash the system" type songs too.

Although they are anarcho-communists, Rage Against the Machine makes some rocking "anti-establishment" jams.

Some good ones:

"Guerilla Radio"

"Know your Enemy"

...And nobody has ever taught you how to live out on the street, But now you're gonna have to get used to it...

Going back further, there were lots of anti-statist themes in old folk and some blues tunes.

Woody Guthrie (though more of a anarcho-syndicalist) had many songs that focused on anti-statism.

Mojo Nixon is another Libertarian artist.

And this doesn't even go into the crazy world of country and western music that has libertarian themes.

And we can't forget George Harrison's song Taxman. Stick out tongue

Well, neither am I. Stick out tongue

Some of the more well known "country rebels" are Waylon Jennings, Hank Williams (and his son and grandson, HW Jr. and HW III), David Allen Coe, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Billy Joe Shaver, etc.

You can find many "rebel" themes in some of the tunes of those guys.

Also Phil Ochs tends to have the heart in the right place, if you can get past the whole "I`m supporting Mao" deal.

Just listened to some Rebel Meets Rebel (David Allen Coe + members of Pantera) and felt compelled to mention them.

The song Cherokee Cry is really cool.  Country metal at it's finest. Stick out tongue

Talk about indian rights and wrongs
Sing a few more freedom songs
Look to the spirit, ride the wind
Let's not walk that trail of tears again

Digging up our sacred grounds
Won't you leave the dead alone
Let the eagle fly and the buffalos roam
And give us back our home

Cherokee cry (x4)

Right up front I want my freedom back
I know about Geronimo's Cadillac
That's how you got us on the reservation
Don't talk to me about segregation

Digging up our sacred grounds
Won't you leave the dead alone
Let the eagle fly and the buffalos roam
And give us back our home

Cherokee cry (x4)

Set me free, yeah

Cry, oh, cherokee cry (x4)

You also have Rush, a band with a heavy Ayn Rand influence. Check this song, called The Trees:

There is unrest in the forest,
There is trouble with the trees,
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas.

The trouble with the maples,
(And they're quite convinced they're right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light.
But the oaks can't help their feelings
If they like the way they're made.
And they wonder why the maples
Can't be happy in their shade.

There is trouble in the forest,
And the creatures all have fled,
As the maples scream "Oppression!"
And the oaks just shake their heads

So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights.
"The oaks are just too greedy;
We will make them give us light."
Now there's no more oak oppression,
For they passed a noble law,
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet, axe, and saw.

The Kinks are great in this area. Some good tracks are: "Yes Sir, No Sir", "Mr. Churchill Says", "Brainwashed", "20th Century Man", "Acute Schizophrenia Paranoia Blues", "Here Come the People in Grey", and "Mountain Woman".

I am also partial to the popular "Fortunate Son" by CCR.

The only Rage Against the Machine album I have listened to is the self titled.  I don't get much of a state-communist vibe from the lyrics, but there is a community spiritedness to the lyrics.  Some of my favorite lyrics off the album:

"So-called facts are fraud, they want us to allege and pledge, and bow down to their God"

"The teacher stands in front of the class, but the lesson plan he can't recall.  The student's eyes don't perceive the lies bouncing of every f****** wall.  His composure is well kept, I guess he fears playing the fool.  Complacent students sit, and listen to that BS that he learned in school"

"Yes I know my enemies, they're the teachers who taught me to fight me.  Compromise, conformity, assimilation, submission, ignorance, hypocrisy, brutality, the elite.  All of which are American dreams..."

"Now I've got no patience, so sick of complacence"

"If we don't take action now, we'll settle for nothing later.  Settle for nothing now, and settle for nothing later."

"They load the clip in omnicolor, they pack the 9, and fire it a prime time. Sleeping gas, every home like Alcatraz, and MF lost their mind"

Anyway, I like that album.

Metallica has a number of songs with an anti-war theme:

No Remorse, Fight Fire with Fire, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Battery, Disposable Heroes, Blackened

Many of their songs have intelligent lyrics, if you like that type of music (which I do).

All hip hop has a revolutionary edge, especially stuff like Dead Prez, The Coup (both marxist, sadly, but they do attack government corruption etc), Ras Kass (my favourite political rapper), Talib Kweli, Jeru tha Damaja, most 2Pac, Immortal Technique (leftist), Ice Cube, Goodie Mob...

The Roots: "they got high-powered lenses on the cameras outside/there ain't nowhere to run there ain't hardly nowhere to hide/they hear you when you're whispering so try to keep quiet" etc

The difference between libertarianism and socialism is that libertarians will tolerate the existence of a socialist community, but socialists can't tolerate a libertarian community.

Half-every metal song is about rebellion; most of punk as well -;)

Hmm, and what about The Wall, for the thought control bit?

Also, if you understand French, Leo Ferre (a French anarchist singer) has very very cool lyrics, nearly sounds like poetry.

Steel Pulse - Handsworth Revolution

I say the people of Handsworth, know that
One hand wash the other so they say
So let's join hands my bredren
Make the way for our children (our children, our children)
And their children (their children, their children)
Ensuring that they get life's fair share of...
Equality...
Doesn't justice stand for all
Doesn't justice stand for all
Doesn't justice stand for all mankind
We find society putting us down
Crowning us, crowning us, crowning us, crowning us
A place of Evil, OH, OH
Handsworth means us the Black People
Handsworth means us the Black People
We're taiklng now. Speaking Jah Jah language!

It's a long, long way we're coming from
To send this message across, across
Its been hidden, forbidden, concealed, unrevealed
Its got to come out In the open that -

BABYLON IS FALLING
BABYLON IS FALLING

It was foolish to build It on the sand
Handsworth shall stand, firm - like Jah rock
- fighting back
We once beggars are now choosers
No intention to be losers
Striving forward with ambition
And if it takes ammunition
We rebel in Handsworth revolution

Dread town, dread town, dread town,
Dread town, dread town, dread town,

Dread we are for a cause
Deprived of many things
Experienced phoney laws
Hatred Babylon brings
We know what we got to offer
We know what's going on
Don't want no favours
Cause there is still hunger
Innocent convicted
Poor wage, hard labour
Only Babylon prospers
And humble suffer
They are brothers in south of Africa
One Black represent all, all over the world
Can't bear it no longer
Blessed wlththe power
Of Jah Creator
We will get stronger

Lucky Dube - Taxman

I pay my gardener
To clean up my garden
I pay my doctor
To check out da other ting
I pay my lawyer
To fight for my rights
And I pay my bodyguard
To guard my body
There' s only one man I pay
But I don' t know what I' m paying for
I' m talking about the taxman x3

Chorus: (x4)
What have you done for me lately
Mr taxman

You take from the rich
Take from the poor
You even take from me
Can' t understand it now
I pay for the police
To err..I don' t know why
'Cause if my dollar was good enough
There wouldn' t be so much crime
In the streets
They tell me you' re a fat man
