should the government decide who is legal to employ?
i hear conservatives call for a police state that calls for strict legal labor laws and enforcement, is this good or bad for freedom?
cab21: should the government decide who is legal to employ?
No.
Bad.
To paraphrase Marc Faber: We're all doomed, but that doesn't mean that we can't make money in the process. Rabbi Lapin: "Let's make bricks!" Stephan Kinsella: "Say you and I both want to make a German chocolate cake."
Consider this: some European countries have the "right to work" written in their constitutions. Want to guess which ones they are? If you answered "France and Italy, the sick twins of Europe" step up and collect your prize.
If you take a look at how both these governments deformed the labor market by effectively deciding who should be employed and at which wage rate in the name of the "right to work", you cannot but wonder why is somebody still advocating the same cure which helped turn two former industrial powerhouses into the present trainwreck. Perhaps it's another case of "this time will be different, honest".
The smoking gun is the scheme to force firms to hire disabled people once they reach a certain number of employees. Mind you cannot just hire a disabled person of your liking (say, somebody without a leg with the needed qualifications to do office work): you have to take what the bureacrats decide. These persons are by all effects "unfireable" and you often end up with psychiatric patients who belong to an asylum, not a for profit enterprise, if not with a welfare queen.
