  • Logic should not be trusted.

There is no reason to believe logic since the justifications for logic are based on the validity of logic and are therefore circular. For instance, the validity of Occam's Razor (being based on fact that the more assumptions one makes the more likely one is to be wrong) is dependent upon Occam's...

  • Re: Interesting logical puzzle (see if you can solve it).

Sat. 12/05/26 16:21 EDT . post #153 Let's take the simplest case: Only one blue-eyed person on the island. Everyone except the blue-eyed person already knows "there is at least one blue-eyed person on the island." After the announcement, the blue-eyed person now also possesses this knowledge...

  • The Law of Non-Contradiction

I think the law of non-contradiction is just an attempted antidote to the problem of how people often confuse themselves (and others) with their own diction. Suppose a man claims, "That apple is green not green at the same time." Now this statement is clearly nonsense. However, calling it "nonsense"...

  • Re: Logical Fallacies Resources

Here is a decent list , but to anyone interested in ultimate extirpation of the more subtle logical fallacies I recommend heading straight to the core of the matter, which is the use and abuse of language. Many word-based errors are documented here: http://lesswrong.com/lw/od/37_ways_that_words_can_be_wrong...

  • Re: Were any of the authors featured at the Misis Institute Christians?

@ Daniel Muffinburg My logic? Look you just quoted me saying its NOT that I will not read it but its about taking it seriously. And then you repeat the argument that that quote refuted. Once again... My logic? Seriously?

  • basis of 'human action' defective?

"Mises insisted that the logical structure of human minds is the same for everybody." First off, one cannot simply jump to the conclusion that everybody has the same logical structure to their mind without proof of such... especially when one plans on basing their entire theory of economics...

  • Re: Mises, Quine, and the analytic/synthetic distinction.

The analytic/synthetic distinction is merely an artifact of language-based explanation. In other words, it's useful in casual speech to distinguish between two types of statements: those that are "logically necessary" (analytic) and those that "factually correspond with reality"...

  • Re: Is Stephen Hawking the Paul Krugman of Physics?

unlapped_dog in reply to z1235: "Would you agree that any attempt to understand or explain aspects of reality requires the creation of a model?" All reasoning is creating models (which consist of sets of assumptions) and deducing what logically follows from them.

  • Re: Is Stephen Hawking the Paul Krugman of Physics?

unlapped_dog in reply to z1235: "this is THE all encompassing question we are dealing with here, this is absolutely key. are we searching for truth or are we searching for rationality? you are asking me what the true nature of reality is with that question, and i am saying that it is not rationalizable...

  • Tim Geithner's Logic behind spending, ....uh?

“We must demonstrate a commitment to reducing long-term deficits, but not at the price of short-term growth. Without growth now, deficits will rise further and undermine future growth,” Larry Summers and Tim Geithner said in an open letter to the Wall Street Journal Wednesday. Im stuck.....
