  • Re: health care as a "right"

[quote]In some views, having a right to life includes having a right to be given at least the bare minimum one needs for continued life. But suppose that what in fact is the bare minimum a man needs for continued life is something he has no right at all to be given? If I am sick unto death, and the only thing that will save my life is the touch

  • Re: How to refute this argument

it is impossible to have true socialism be totalitarian, that is an oxymoron. In socialism, the workers own the means of production and thus cannot be subjected to a totalitarian form of government. I don't think I've ever actually engaged a true socialist on this question, but this is what I would say: How does one ensure that the workers always

  • Re: What kind of music do Austrians listen to?

I like a nice mix of classic rock, psychedelia, prog, art-rock, avant-garde/experimental, and world folk. The most concise way to explain would be to link to my blip.fm station: http://blip.fm/autofyrsto .

  • Re: Rant: Statism in your camera.

Mainly the tax. Learning of the bizarre tax rule first set me reeling and researching. My main reason for posting was to alert people to yet another way the state influences the minutae of our lives. But then reading the celebration of statism on that camera enthusiasts' web forum gave me a second dose of reel. Egad. It reminds one of the mindset

  • Rant: Statism in your camera.

It's the little things that set me off. I could have complained about any state-sponsored crime against humanity, but I chose to write about this. Camera Labs | Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100 super-zoom review Nice camera. Lots of great features. Two-thirds down the page: There is however one important caveat for the European version of the Lumix FZ100

  • Re: Inflation - how should inflation be defined?

Esuric wrote: Inflation is defined by an increase in the supply of money beyond the demand for money (this doesn't necessary yield general price inflation but it will always yield relative price distortions). This is the definition used by Hayek, Mises, Wicksell, and others. I was about to write something like: "When the money supply increases

  • Re: Town turns off traffic lights--civility ensues.

I saw this video as a meme a couple years ago: Crazy Traffic in India: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsPCsW3_aUY Sometimes I think of a green traffic light as a license to blow through an intersection without much regard for what is coming the other way....

Instead, the government should provide services because it can focus on providing goods to PEOPLE instead of pursuing profits. Governments can ensure a minimum standard of living for all, while regulating the market to avoid economic catastrophes like the great depression. All the most successful countries in the world have strong central governments

X wrote: --Now being employed AND supported, the needy people aren't needy anymore. And if you want to be a wiseguy, you can say: "If the needy aren't needy any more, then they don't need any more of my money, then, do they?" Thomas E. Woods explains how, as a general rule, people like X tend to underestimate the need of the needy
