I recall hearing from a Chinese person (and I'm afraid I can't remember exactly where in China they said this occurred) but that when people were allowed some semblance of private property they created fruit and vegetable gardens, but once real commerce returned the gardens were no longer about subsistence and instead became symbolic of surplus
