• Re: My Econometric Model - Devil's Advocates Wanted

The point with getting an education is, hopefully, to get a well-paying job. And if you get a job then you have to pay a lot of income taxes. (The model in northern European "socialist" countries is to pay for social programs trough high personal income taxes and leave corporate taxes relatively low, because corporations flee taxation.) So
If they're smart, they'll claim its a necessary but insufficient condition.
I suppose I just made you the devils advocate. Well, how is state education a necessary condition for economic well-being? What can it do that free market education can't? If you think this is off-topic, and you want to keep this thread about your
I brought this up in a discussion, and the opponent simply pointed out that denmark has far less oil and yet maintains a high standard of living because of their strong socialist education system. Thoughts?
Russia, Cuba and North Korea had socialist education systems, how come they don't have high standards of living? Russia even

This might be an uninformed comment, but isn't GDP a bad measure of economic performance if you are going to be that precise about it? I mean, GDP measures how much money we spend in an economy. But isn't the strength of free markets that it brings down prices, i.e. less money is spent in the economy? If commodities are produced in abundance
Let's say there is no social security and there is a disabled person who lives in my building. ... He needs some peace and assurance that the money WILL come. How can we make it happen?
Most people are pretty charitable when allowed to keep their money. And many would be happy to donate to charity to help the the truly needy. What

"The post-war, pre-fed era saw frequent and severe recessions/depressions, this was due to the gold standard and a decentralized banking system." It's not like there was no government involvement in the economy post-war, pre-fed. There were central banks, which might have caused the recessions. And actually I think post-war, pre-fed the

  • Re: Are unions and labor laws always bad?

Eugene. Factories in the 19th century didn't make their employees work, they wanted to work that long and under such conditions because it was an improvement for them. Conditions in the countryside were even more backbreaking, why else would people have moved to the cities to get a job in a factories? Society was dirt poor back then and working

  • Re: Free market solutions

Hi Eugene. There always is a free market solution. The only purpose of the government is the use of force, anything else the free market can do better. Total insurance: The uncoerced market would offer any insurance you can think of. Anything you can come up with and put in a contract. Its not like the sheer size of a disaster could overwhelm the insurance

  • Re: Is Peak Oil a Tragedy of the Commons?

80% of the worldwide oil supply is controlled by governments. Production statistics are therefore not proof of peak oil, but of the whims of some central planner.
