• Re: Does the government own your land?

By god, everything would be sooooo much easier if governments actually did own the land they claim. As things stand, the very concept of strict ownership, not only of land but of anything at all, is intolerable to our modern democratic ideology. At most, people are willing to settle for semi-private management, but never ownership.

  • Re: Can a Nuclear Reactor Be Shut Down After it Starts?
So, was Fukishima an older type?
As far as I know there are no new (fourth generation) operational reactors anywhere, though a few are scheduled. Every reactor now in use is of the older kind which will melt in extreme circumstances.

  • Re: Can a Nuclear Reactor Be Shut Down After it Starts?

Any fission reactor, as far as I know, has a moderating element (such as graphite) designed to moderate its operation (the speed of the reaction). If the fuel rods are completely immersed in such a moderating material, the reaction will completely stop. With old reactors though, once you got to the point of overheating, there was nothing else you could

  • Re: Django Unchained.

I myself greatly enjoyed it as a movie. Alas, beyond its entertainment content, I think it is sorely lacking. I feel the whole portrayal of the South was cartoonish, with not a single white local being close to decent, and with every single slave being grievously maltreated at every turn. Be it even because you do not treat your own property like that

  • Re: Austrian Defense of the Euro

As far as I understand, the point is just that the Euro is stronger than the former currencies of most Eurozone countries, and thus has been beneficial to them. I would not construe his argument into saying that, in general, joint monetary policy yet independent fiscal policies are beneficial. It just so happens with the Euro, and even that for the

  • Re: Was Luke Skywalker wrong for destroying the Death Star?
If the guy was simply a murderer and you were acting to exact justice (as anyone is justified in murdering a murderer) then you would be just as guilty of murder as the murderer himself.
Of course. You cannot burn your way through a whole neighborhood to kill one guy in retribution,as you'd be far worse

It is indeed wrong for the human shield to die , but not for me to shoot through him. It is the suicide bomber who has put him in this most unfortunate position and I think we can agree that it is the suicide bomber who is responsible for murder in this case. Otherwise, saying that you are not allowed to kill them and should instead see how the bomb

Also, you could use its giant gravity field to catch errant asteroids for mining. Wouldn’t that be something?
