  • Re: Explaining to Socialists, or whoever, how the free market regulates ITSELF

Government distorts the market. They create moral hazard. They insulate people from true competition. As a result of their interference, the market "fails". They then have to regulate and control ever more aspects of people's lives. You see, if people don't have to take full responsibility for their own actions, the government must

  • Re: Got some spare cash? Build a giant ant!

Yeah, you don't have to worry about healthcare or education until it goes horribly wrong...then you can blame the market or just lobby for more funding! If you have $200,000 cash in hand, it's all about how you can blow it in a way that makes your voters happy in the very short term. Who are they going to vote for: the guy who built them a giant

  • Got some spare cash? Build a giant ant!

When you don't have to work for your money or worry about where it comes from you can do lots of cool stuff, like build a giant $200,000 ant in a town with only 580 people! Unbelievable . What cool stuff would you do if you were in charge of a small town and had $200,000 of someone else's money to blow (aside from giving it back to them of course

  • Re: It's not called fractional reserve because they loan out $9 of a $10 deposit

There's no reserve ratio in Australia and our banks currently have $1.338 trillion worth of deposits and only $6.7 billion in notes, coins and deposits due from the reserve bank. That works out as a reserve ratio of 0.5%. I might add that our central bank pumped plenty of cash into the banks between Sept - Dec 2008, increasing reserves 380% in three

  • Financial crisis will not happen again

...because the IMF will peer-review economic policy from now on to ensure it meets "desired standards." Source . I don't know how they can say that with a straight face...

  • Re: Wondering eyes...

I've also noticed a lot of teams are sponsored by quasi-government organisations too...In Australia, the Brumbies (Super 14 Rugby Union team) - conveniently located in Canberra where there's nothing but politicians, the state-funded ANU, state-run 'institutes' (sport, military etc) and businesses set up to support them - are sponsored

  • Wondering eyes...

It seems the UK government is eagerly looking around for successful industries to meddle with, the latest of which is the Football Association. Full story here . "Sports minister Gerry Sutcliffe has defended the government's demand for reform of the Football Association. Sutcliffe wants the FA to introduce two independent, non-executive directors

  • Re: Safety deposit boxes

The dollar is debased every year. Storing your paper dollars in a safety deposit box isn't a practical way to save under a fiat money regime. It's also far more convenient to use a piece of plastic to buy things online, at the store and so on rather having to go into your bank (between 9:30-4:30!) to withdraw money -- it also means you don't
