wonder what you guys think of the utilitarian view on property rights and the stuff associated with it like david friedman talks in his book http://www.daviddfriedman.com/Libertarian/Machinery_of_Freedom/MofF_Contents.html

especially the property rights issue(high energy laser beam buzzing through neighbour terrritory etc) in paragraphs 41-43

since the libertarian argumentation seems to be the overwhelming way to approach the issue on these boards, would be interesting to seee critique on him

I haven't read the article yet, but I was wondering what system of ethics is not based on utilitarianism, even religious ethics. What is a good article on utilitarianism and property rights?

Well since utilitarianism just came around ca. late 1700's and early 1800's I'd say a lot of systems other than it, but a utilitarianist would know more than I.  Just commented since you seemed to think it was the only one around.  I've seen some amoralist around too.  So there you go...

libertarian utilitarianism is properly called preference utilitarianism and it predates rule and act based utilitarianisms.  I would suggest reading John Stuart Mill's On Liberty.
