I realized something really strange a couple of seconds ago, why is the question "who will take care of the poor" are hard question? It is so irrational.
The most strange implication of it is that it is preferable that poor people are taken care of. Why is society where people have to be "taken care of" systemically, desirable? Does that not imply that people are regularly made poor, in addition to that these poor people are not to be raised out of poverty but are to be "taken care of".
To be "taken care of" sounds horrible. Because it implies that you will never truly leave poverty, but will be maintained just above that state. It is to me like a child who never grows up to leave his house. Why should people be maintained at level of just-above-poverty?
They might assert an absurd egalitarianism at that point, claiming that we should keep the poor (people who are unable to take care of themselves) at higher levels. That sort of parasitism is so transparent though people won't be stopped in argument by it.
A society that maintains its impoverished people is not a society to be held as an example to other societies, theoretical or existent. A society of this nature would be creating impoverished people. Then this society would remove these people from their struggle to be self-sustaining. These people may even become dependent on their "care takers".
The "care takers", instead of allowing nature to force these people to sink, swim, or find legitimate help (intellectuals or various kinds), remove them from the situation where their problems can be the most apparent. The opportunity to overcome these problems is stolen from them by these "care takers". They may be maintained above poverty, but they will only be that, any potential is stolen from them.
NOTE: I understand that a lot of impoverished people are not their by fault of their own, I am simply trying to highlight the dangers of that sort of thinking.
ANOTHER NOTE: By intellectuals I mean "The providers of ideas". I believe that ideas are what allows people to raise themselves out of poverty. I am using the word "ideas" very loosely. I don't care if it is something a deep emotional and existential nature or learning how to read or write.
The concept of poverty is pure artifice. The average income is estimated at $150/year for 99.9% of human history. A 10 year old can make that mowing a few lawns. What is poverty? Answer: whatever you want it to be.
