I heard a survivalist say when the crash comes he'll have rice and bullets while gold bugs have yellow pieces of metal.  What good is gold in a world regressed to bartering?

My thought is it's still a medium of exchange but I don't know.

If everybody has rice, what good is rice for barter?  It seems to me that if we reach that point the market will decide what the best money is.
