freeradicals Posted: Sun, Jan 30 2011 6:38 PM

I'm a professional web developer and would be happy to work on a small/medium project on my free time to spread the message of AE and how government intervention, not the free market, has caused so much trouble with our economy.

One idea I had was to create an interactive timeline showing step-by-step how the real estate bubble built up and popped. Then when people claim that the free market caused it I can link them to it and it will be a more to the point and engaging instead of digging through news articles and books etc. A good way to engage newer people to the concept. I could further build this as a framework for any event and put up numerous sites giving a new perspective on commonly skewed events.

Another idea I came up with but would be too much to do on my own was to create a simulation game like SimCity but instead of a mayor centrally planning everything you look down upon a world of people with needs and you as an entrepreneur must launch or supply capital to other businesses that meet those needs. The twist of course is that there will be no such thing as government. Security, food, healthcare etc will all be provided through private companies (you will also have to compete with others). The idea behind this one was to demonstrate how a society could function without state control and make it fun and engaging at the same time.

If anyone would be so kind as to provide their own thoughts on something I could work on or if anyone was interested in collaborating on something I would be more than happy to bounce ideas. I also didn't want to do something that was already in place so I figured here would be a good starting point for something new and innovative. Thank you.

That would be really, really cool if you're able to do it. That could actually become a well-known game. If you end up doing a similar project and need dialogue/writing for anything, I'm down to help with it.

I would love to help in any way I can. I am a MIS major and this sounds interesting. Essentially what you could do with the second idea is create SecondLife but with no rules. Could be a real money maker.

filc, Thanks for that link! As a "noob" myself, things like that are a goldmine.

O.k., What gives with this software? This is the second time that I've double-posted this week due to my original not showing up, which then leads me to believe I erred somehow. Sorry......

 Great idea.

Thanks! And filc thanks for the link that's a lot of good resources! But were you suggesting I point people to here instead of making something else in regard to the real estate bubble? Seems like this already does a good job I didn't know about this daily.

Thanks Brian I see a lot of potential with this, but I am just a single busy coder so it will be hard to do this in a timely manner but I could further explore it if I had some unexpected free time or another coder.

Thanks that would be really cool if we could pull it off. I am sure though we would need some kind of game engine to make it efficiently. Not sure yet exactly how I could do this, whether it's browser-based (some tough javascript) or a game engine to make an installable game (this is uncharted territory for me).

Great idea.

After coding through the weekend I am finally done with a draft of what I was talking about when I first mentioned this idea.

Anyone who would be kind enough to take a quick peek at my first-draft and provide feedback would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

http://www.circusfrost.com/    (funny domain name I know but I owned it and hadn't used it yet so figured I'd just use it for this)

I realize the content is a bit lagging but my time was split between research, programming and plugging in data since I was doing all of it. However, this demonstrates my thoughts behind it.  Note: when changing dates, give it a second to update the graphs below. If anyone wants to work with me on this project or one similar to it let me know as well, I'll appreciate/use any help I can get :)
