I believe I have a rather unusual first memory. It occured when I was about 3. I realized, some afternoon or other, it might have been while watching my dad buy Camels from a vending machine, that I had no previous memories of events. I knew who people were, where I lived, but it was that very moment that I became self-aware. It was a first moment of introspection. Wierd, huh?
My first memory is of having my diaper changed by my babysitter when I was 2 and she was 14. Embarassing. >_>

Day after preschool for 3-4 year olds, in car seat, mother asking how my time there was.
Perhaps we should more carefully study toddlers and look for these "ah ha" moments, if possible without unethically restricting the child's lives.
Gaining insight into conciousness would be a very interesting step forward, especially in debates about consent and choice and sentience on this forum.
