Hey guys,
I'm thinking about starting up a project, so I wanted to get some feedback from all of you. The project I'm thinking about is a YouTube channel dedicated to explaining different ideas of libertarianism/anarchism and the free market. I think I'm going to refer to it as Libertarianism even though I will also add some Anarchism 'theory' to it.
The entire point of it will be based on this quotation by Leo Tolstoy: "The Anarchists are right in everything; in the negation of the existing order, and in the assertion that, without Authority, there could not be worse violence than that of Authority under existing conditions. They are mistaken only in thinking that Anarchy can be instituted by a revolution. But it will be instituted only by there being more and more people who do not require the protection of governmental power ... There can be only one permanent revolution – a moral one: the regeneration of the inner man." I want to get younger people like me to realize how little the government really does for them despite the loads of money we throw at it every year, and also how certain things would work in a completely free market.
Many people I know are skeptic about minimum wage laws and stuff, and I'll explain in one episode how taking away minimum wage laws would lower the price of goods and how we wouldn't be ruled by wealth necessarily. Along with that, people are scared of being ruled by the Fortune 500 CEOs and everything without government, yet we only have 10% of that amount of people controlling our laws in the Senate.
Other topics I have in mind besides minimum wage are how stimulus packages don't work, illegal immigration, and why voting people into power when we're given only two choices doesn't make sense.
For now I'd like to focus on minimum wage laws, so if you guys think this is a good idea, I'd really like some good links to videos, papers, etc. so I can fit in everything to make a great point without being too confusing to the audience. And if this works out well, I'll hopefully be making a new post like this every week for ideas and I'll keep uploading new videos. Thanks a lot for the help!
Go for it. A good way to grow a channel is to attach videos as responses. If you do it to guys like Fringeelements, Cali9ula, Spawktalk, LibertyInOurTime, InTheEndIWasRight, etc. you could get a following going. The Youtube Austrians are really what got me to be an Austrian after I became a Ron Paul fanboy
There's on guy on the Internet named LudditeRomantic. God damn, I didn't think a human being could be wrong about so much, but I found one! That's harsh on him, but I literally disagree with about everything he says.
Thank you for the links. Yeah, Ron Paul and YouTube are the reason I'm an Austrian now. Before I just had no clue. I'll make sure to check all of those channels out! Hahaha, and I'll check out that other guy when I'm already in an annoyed mood. Thanks again!
Agree with Eric080. You really need to familiarize yourself with the people he mentioned, especially fringeelements. I think he has advanced anti-statism in a really big way. He has some really good stuff out there. The Youtube anti-statist/market anarchist community is actually a flourishing one, for better or for worse (I think better). But yeah definitely start up a channel and join in on the action.
Oh, and to Eric080, I completely agree on LudditeRomantic! I subbed him for a couple days thinking he was worth debating with and hearing, but he's completely bogus.
He's unbelievable. His arguments basically boil down to, "I don't find this situation feasible, so without constructing a positive argument for libertarian free will or the unviability of psychological egoism, I think I'm entirely within my rights to believe the opposite." He doesn't build positive arguments for his positions at least in the videos I have seen.
Let's run down the list: He's a moral realist (which is opposed to ethical subjectivism which I believe is the only tenable solution for morality), he's not a hard atheist (an agnostic I believe and sympathetic to the idea of God), believes in libertarian free will, denies psychological egoism, and I'm pretty sure he's a Marxist/collectivist/socialist/democrat/fill-in-the-blanks. I'm open to the arguments between free will and determinism, but as for everything else, I disagree big-time with him.
And I guess I was also going to say I don't mind debating people or listening to other points of view, but there's just something about him that pisses me off so much.
Indeed. You're correct, he doesn't really construct any logical positive arguments of his own, he basically just tries to critique people (and often with a strawman), especially fringeelements. Have you noticed the massive obsession that the Youtube socialists have with fringeelements? Check out NoMoreSunsets channel if you haven't, she's about the same as LudditeRomantic except with some more logic. I made a video reply to one of hers recently as well. She's obsessed with fringeelements too.
I thought NoMoreSunsets was Luddite or BrainPolice. Fringeelements is a little immature and that gets annoying quickly, but he has some very well-done videos. You can see a lot of his old ones posted on a channel called CSMirror from his ConfederalSocialist days.
EDIT: Oh whoops, I figured NoMoreSunsets always used that computerized voice.
Yeah I know about pretty much all his channels. I think he's great, really I don't mind admitting that. He can seem arrogant at times and maybe a bit immature, but he has covered pretty much every major aspect of anti-statism and really well at that.
I just checked out some of the people you guys mentioned and I'd have to say some pretty good stuff. Fringelements has some nice stuff. Cali9ula had some harsh stuff to say about some of the "figureheads" of market anarchy, especially Hoppe and Lew Rockwell. I know its his opinion but he cut them up pretty bad. Has anyone else seen this video? If so, what did you think.
"It is easy to be conspicuously 'compassionate' if others are being forced to pay the cost." - Murray N. Rothbard.
Yeah, I agreed with him on some people. I like Walter Block a lot, but Cali9ula is right that he's somewhat of a restatement of Rothbard. Don't know that much about Hoppe. I appreciate everything Rockwell has done, but I'm generally not a huge fan of his particular opinions. I also don't think he gave nearly enough credit to Roderick Long. I'm a huge fan of Roderick myself and do indeed think he's added some important aspects to market anarchism.
You have to get used to Cali9ula, he's got a really pessimistic monotone way of presenting his opinions.
