I am somewhat new to the anarchist philosophy so I haven't ironed everything out yet but I was thinking of ways that the privitization of the police could be accomplished. Generally speaking, private companies can compete with one another and would be very similar to the state funded police. They would carry weapons and have the ability to apprehend people who violated peoples natural rights. This part is easy imagine but what gets difficult to me is how this is paid for and how a large number of people would have access to these services. I decided that the best way to accomplish this is much like insurance where customers of the private police would pay a monthly premium. I guess it would be like "agression insurance." The police would be responsible for apprehending people who assault the customers or steal/vandalise property ect. Another aspect is that just like any other insurance several factors play a role in the cost of the monthly premium. People who live in areas with higher crime rates would have to pay higher monthly premiums than people who live in areas with low crime rates. People who have criminal records (im assuming that the crimes are actually real crimes and not the non crimes enforced in todays society) would also have to pay higher premiums because they may be at risk to comitting crimes in the future which requies the services of the police. Then there is the courts but thats another issue. What is some good books or essays on this topic? I assume Rothbard and Block have written on this before. Thanks

That's one possible solution.  But, predicting the world in ten years is difficult.  Predicting a world in ten years without government is even more difficult.

An overview of an example of a world without government:  http://libertyactivism.info/wiki/The_Market_for_Liberty

Well, let's look at what police basically do for starters.

Police, in a modern sense, are individuals that are hired by the "government" (which is a state) to enforce their "laws" onto other people who live in a geographical territory that they claim to have sole authority over (in cooperation with other "governments").

Let's refer to these types of governments as just states.

That is most likely how it would work. And I'm sure some communities would voluntarily get together and pool money for a "neighborhood watch" type of deal. You should research about fire departments too because of how similar they would be in organization. Here is one paper on how they came to be from what they were. A short one here. This is pretty long, but it includes courts/law too.
