I have heard many people say "I don't matter" for a number of things. Voting, donating, picking up their own trash, smiling and saying hello, etc.

I even recently likely fell into this pile when I was looking at the Wikipedia donate button. "Well, I'd donate like $5, but I mean, my effort won't make a difference!"

This is quite a terrible mentality to be in. However, an idea came to mind:

An "I don't matter" website (the idea is for fundraising, though I guess it could be expanded).

The way it works:

1) You sign up for the "I don't matter" (IDM) website.

2) You find some fundraiser which integrates the IDM system

3) Now, you transfer your $5 donation to the IDM website under a contract: If total IDM donations for this cause are above a certain amount (say $10,000) by a certain date, transfer my donation to the cause. If not, return it to me.

This way, if you truly don't matter, your money is safe. But if you do matter, and if there are a lot of people who think they don't matter but would help if they felt they mattered, then the cause is supported.

The idea is similar to a double-voting system. Many people don't vote for Paul because they think others won't vote for him. If there are 2 rounds of voting (which I don't necessarily advocate, I just am explaining), the first round could be a "true preference" vote to see whether there is a point to vote for your guy in the second round, which would be the real round.

There are many examples of websites that do this already, the two big ones I can think of off the top of my head are The Point and Kickstarter:

Well then, sir, my job here is done. Thank you for shedding light on my ignorance. And apparent lack of skill/desire to employ a search engine :P
