I recently saw Alphaville and have been puzzled by it, mainly with the relationship of the ideology of the film and the ideology of the film maker, Jean Luc Goddard.   For those not familiar with Goddard, he is a French  Marxist filmmaker who is perceived by the majority of movie critics as one of the greatest filmmakers ever; primarily for his work in the 1960's and 1970's.  The Movie of his in question, Alphaville, is set in a dystopian future in which vocabulary, emotions, and relationships are all regulated by a supercomputer that plans all affairs.  This society is reached through the extermination of all those who oppose its realization.

I'm puzzled because the film seems to stand against Marxist doctrines, but this was almost certainly not the intention of Godard.  Does anyone know how someone could not realize the similarities between the society depicted in this film and that of communism?  For those familiar with Godard, Is there something about the movie, or about Godard that I'm simply not comprehending?

For anyone interested in viewing the movie, it can be seen here:
