Telepathy obviously. I have already invented it, so it's good to go. Only thing is, I can't afford a patent, so I won't be presenting it, because I fear someone else will patent my invention. No, but seriously, I do not think secrecy or stuff like that is going to help us. The internet is poweful because it is easy to use, and everywhere. Sure, there is some value in building a network that isn't dependant on government in case something goes wrong. But right now, we need to educate poeple and bring them to our cause. If we bring enough people to our cause, government will not be able to touch the internet in fear of retaliation. As it stands, I think they're already afraid of touching it. Even with things like IPRED in the EU and so on. Keep on spreading information publically, don't be afraid, arm yourselvesif you can!

Re: cyber freedom

Snowflake:

No. The OP is right.
Obviously, certain people do not. While we enjoy First Amendment protections in the United States, China and the Middle East are sorely lacking in online freedom. Moreover, our own Internet freedom is jeapardized when we do not take precautions to prevent increased surveillance and censorship.

So what shall we then do? I use GPL-licensed software as much as possible. Microsoft cannot be trusted. I use linux. Given that Google calls the shots in the development of the Firefox web browser, I prefer to use Galeon. I use search engines that do not store personal data on users: ixquick.com and yauba.com. ixquick.com lets you search using ssl encryption so ISP's don't see what you're doing. Yauba.com also has a proxy service that lets your browse anonymously. Skype rats out their Chinese users to the government, so I use Ekiga.

I'm still not satisfied with Ekiga. Ekiga, even though it is open-source, uses the SIP protocol, which routes messages through servers instead of client-to-client. I wish that there was an instant-message protocol that sent messages client-to-client, encrypted, and disguised as port-80 HTTP web traffic. Unfortunately, no such IM protocol yet exists.

Finally, there is the possibility that somebody might shut down the major ISP's in wartime or some other "emergency". Think kill-switch.

So what we need are decentralized routing algorithms that can run on modified wireless equipment.

This can achieve unregulated wireless communication links as long as 180 miles which can be used for voice communications, text chat, or independent news releases.
