Ugh. US foreign policy is idiotic.

First NK gets pushed around by the US, NK then develops nukes, now they get their sanctions lifted and probably aid from the US. Gee, I wonder what message this sends to the dictators of the world.

"Torturing and killing your own people giving you a bad rep? No problem! Just develop thermonuclear weaponry and you can apply for the all-new $20 billion UN/US aid package! As a bonus you'll get a free pass on all the naughty stuff going on in your country and we'll even throw in a mainly positive/lukewarm treatment from the press! So act now! Get those mobile labs refining weapons-grade uranium today!"

It almost seems as though when a poor country gets nukes it is LESS likely to get into fights with neighbors. Look at India and Pakistan. They may not have the warmest of relationships but at least they are not killing each other like they once were. Getting nukes means your enemy might get nukes. This means you don't want to have to use nukes.

Yea, I had trouble believing it also. So I reread the article. I read right the first time. He apparently is going to. Maybe he is starting to learn that sanctions do more harm than good? Could that be – I mean now that he has less than a year in his term left – hmm. I seem to remember that it was toward the end of Bill Clinton’s last term that he lifted the U.S. Embargo against Vietnam. Perhaps this is going to be a pattern for a while. Shortly before a president leaves office that president will lift another embargo. Maybe I am being too optimistic. But, this seems to be good news if he actually follows through with it.
