Are you assuming that there aren't people just as valuable who are not being eliminated by the software, and that it's no cost to the company to manually go through all the people the software does filter that wouldn't be valuable to them?

I think the companies that are using these methods are damaging themselves. Take the guy with 30 years of experience who can't get a job because of the software. If one company decides to notice him and pick him up it will be a great loss for their competitors.

Heh, nobody is saying that goverment should fix how companies hire people, afterall goverment has the most stupid way of hiring, at least here in Brazil, there are the "concursos", if you are best in a "mark the rignt answer" test, you basically get a highly paid (much above market) job with little pressure for results and you are basically unfireable.

Any company that would hire like that, saying "you were gooding chosing the right answer on a test, now you can be shitty that we won't fire you" would go under rather quickly.

But yeah, there is a lot of bullshit when it comes to the hiring proccess in private companies, no doubt about that. And pointing that out doesn't make anyone a socialist, Dilbert's autor is a libertarian and points out a lot of dumb stuff done in business.

No, I've got about $250 in the bank, probably around $2k in possessions, and no job. I don't feel I'm entitled to a job from anyone, and know that whatever applicant selection process they use isn't out to screw me (as if I were so important that they'd take time out to make my life worse).

It should be tremendously easy to find a job - albeit not perhaps at the wage that most people feel they are entitled to - but the government, through burdensome regulations (some, such as the minimum wage, explicity prescribe unemployment, whereas others merely ensure that the marginal enterprises are not profitable) and high taxes has made it very difficult, especially for those who suffer from some abnormality, be it a disability, criminal record, lack of education, lack of employment history, abnormal appearance and also by encouraging the pauperization of society with welfare, compulsory unemployment insurance, etc. Coupled this with ever increasing costs of living owing to the governments insatiable appetite for expanding the money supply and you have more and more people who are squeezed, and who, ironically, turn more and more to the politicians who are applying this pressure to them. Of course if you are a healthy, normal, well adjusted, good looking individual from a good home you will probably never see this problem, and hardly be aware it exists - government policy targets, either purposely or by fortunate accident, marginalized groups - not the traditional minorities, such as ethnic groups or those of a certain sexual preference, but the groups I mentioned previously - creating a permanent underclass in order to fuel demand for the welfare bureaucracy and to ensure left wing 'pro people' political parties have support at the polls. This fuels the counter culture revolution, and brings out support for right wing fasicist parties devoted to the police state, the military, the surveillance state and opposition to left wing political parties (in rhetoric only).
