I think the reason US elections take longer is that they have open primaries.

Re: Longer Election Seasons?

Take a look at this site: http://www.opensecrets.org/index.php

Select Politicians and Elections, then Presidential and then Previous Elections. More stuff is added on a regular basis so visit often. In my opinion this is particularly telling: http://www.opensecrets.org/pres08/totals.php?cycle=2004

Re: Longer Election Seasons?

Even the month-long election seasons in Australia are unbearable.

Re: Longer Election Seasons?

An election campaign in Canada last a few weeks. Elections seem to be more a form of entertainment than politics the U.S.

Longer Election Seasons?

I read an article today in the Christian Science Monitor. It said "The fact that Obama will make it official this week starts the clock ticking toward November 6, 2012 – a mere 583 days from now." To me, that seems like a long time. If my lessons in history serve me correct, this is kinda long, although shorter than the 2004 elections.

I would appreciate it if people could provide historical campaign lengths. And more importantly, historical campaign budgets. The CSM reported that this campaign may cost more than $1 Billion. Seriously?!?! I realize that the bulk of this may come from private funds, but any information relating to historical campaign financing would be welcome as well.

And, lastly, some insight as to what the "advantages" are for running a super long campaign.

I would like to thank everyone in advance for the advice.

**Edit: Change PUBLIC to PRIVATE... Bulk of this may come from PRIVATE funds.**
