I'm intrigued by a lot of the avatars. who or what are they?
I'l start off. Mine is my favorite actor, the inspired genius, Buster Keaton.
He and gf are about to build a house that will soon collapse all over him.
My humble blog
It's easy to refute an argument if you first misrepresent it. William Keizer
Currently it is the Zinaida Serebriakova "Self Portrait"
My "William" acount is a the Roger Fry portrait of one of my favorite poets: Dame Edith Sitwell
P.S: Now I recognize your avatar, it's One Week!
"As in a kaleidoscope, the constellation of forces operating in the system as a whole is ever changing." - Ludwig Lachmann
"When A Man Dies A World Goes Out of Existence" - GLS Shackle
Holo the Wisewolf. The greatest agricultural economist from an animated series.
This thread is already epic.
I figure mine is self-explanatory.
My current avatar is Friedrich Nietzsche. Duh.
Moving back in time:
Commander Ikari from Neon Genesis Evangelion, my favorite show
Maes Hughes from Fullmetal Alchemist
One of my favorite surrealist paintings
Mine is Radiohead, although they don't favour my particular understanding of how the economy works, their music is absolutely amazing. And, when they released In Rainbows, they did what most anti-intellectual property musicians would do, and made their album free, and asked for people to only donate what they can. It, to me, was the greatest album released of all time except for some Beatles albums, and as a result I have fallen in love with the band.
Mine is a humorous jab at one of my favorite movies, 300. My first job was mopping the floor of a grocery store before closing each night. So it's particularly humorous for me personally.
Here's a clip of the relevant scene:
The movie treaded dangerously close to being overly furtive but mostly managed to pull it off, especially if you have a soft-spot for boys' literature, which is where I first read the story of the 300 Spartans at the age of 12; it completely blew my mind. 300 versus one million. Good god. And it's a true story!

I was actually thinking of asking the same question of the user on here with the mouse avatar (why? does he feel like the elite's lab rat?)
@Wheylous: That's gamma_rat. I think it comes from a Doug Casey article where he talks about alpha, beta and gamma rats. Alpha rats try to hoard all the females and "control" the beta rats, who submit to the system. Gamma rats, on the other hand, do not attempt to control any of the other rats and simply wait for the opportunity to become their own alpha rat or, at least, mate with the female rats when the alpha rat isn't looking.
Muffinburg = muffin + castle
Hence, the avatar.
To paraphrase Marc Faber: We're all doomed, but that doesn't mean that we can't make money in the process. Rabbi Lapin: "Let's make bricks!" Stephan Kinsella: "Say you and I both want to make a German chocolate cake."
Daniel Muffinburg:Muffinburg = muffin + castle Hence, the avatar.
Why didn't I realize that before???
Anyway, I think my avatar is self-explanatory because 1) Captain Picard and 2) facepalm.
The keyboard is mightier than the gun.

Voluntaryism Forum
My first avatar was the creator of the greatest webcomic of all time, Andrew Hussie
This is his webcomic
http://mspaintadventures.com/
My second avatar was Lil B, the most ridiculous star in hip hop
Current avatar is from one of my favorite manga, Battle Angel Alita
You can read it here

generic avatar given by the website.
I think that I used to have Rothbard as my avatar.

TheFinest:My first avatar was the creator of the greatest webcomic of all time, Andrew Hussie
I know of Mr. Hussie through his YouTube alter-ego, Gazorra.
Malachi:Sterling Archer, codename DUCHESS, from the tv series Archer. In disguise. I used to use a recent picture of Axl Rose.
So THAT'S why this guy calls another TV character named Archer "Duchess"! LOL!
My avatar is a picture of Sadi Carnot, the important French physicist and thermodynamicist, and I guess my keeping his avatar is a small tribute to the enoyment I had learning and applying the concepts he came up with and are named after him.
Before that my avatar was Wolfgang Pauli, who unfortunately many people here thought was a Lost character. Primitives...
"When the King is far the people are happy." Chinese proverb
For Alexander Zinoviev and the free market there is a shared delight:
"Where there are problems there is life."
Hahahaha, I had no idea Andrew was behind this masterpiece!
That is so cool
Hahahahaha! That's my favorite one!
Edit: More videos can be found here. Check out his Alf edits!
The avatar I just got rid of was Paolo and Francesca by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres:
It's a scene from Dante, I used it because the action and poses in it made me giggle. But more importantly, because my name is Vive La Insurrection - In my head, that dude in the back is about four seconds away from yelling " VIVE LA INSURRECTION!". I may use this again, because it makes me giggle so much.
Other than that this was the first avatar I used:
It's the Death of Sarpedon by Euphronios, which is a very famous piece, that I fortunatlely saw at the New York Met before they shipped it off to Italy. In the Iliad, it may be one of my most loved scenes in all of literature / poetry
Oh,
and I also bring out Max Stirner once in awhile for "war paint"
James J. Hill, the beastmode capitalist known for making fools out of his subsidized competition.
Tsar Ivan Groznyi, one of history's greatest consolidators of state power.
The Anarch is to the Anarchist what the Monarch is to the Monarchist. -Ernst Jünger
Mine is Mises. I made it to match the style of the text in the title bar. I was working on writing a css style for the forum with a blue theme and the mises icon looked better next to the title than the crest did. But, after a while of working on it the forum software was switched and I decided it wasn't worth my time.
looks boss.

James J. Hill pwn'd, he should be a national hero.
I designed a logo for myself - JDK are my initials, so I thought it worked out nicely.
My avatar is mathematician Alexander Grothendieck, whom I'd consider to be the greatest mathematician of the 20th century (maybe of all time). Despite his brilliance, he abandoned his mathematical work sometime during the Cold War, as he saw the threat of nuclear proliferation as a more pressing issue. He has now lost contact with modern society, and his whereabouts are currently unknown.
An imagined portrait of Aristippus of Cyrene.
Mine is Patrick McGoohan as No. 6 in the British surreal sci-fi series the Prisoner. It is a broadly libertarian series and just plain awesome.
My previous avatar was of Enoch Powell the libertarian Conservative Party MP who was also a Greek scholar; he most famously opposed mass immigration.
The atoms tell the atoms so, for I never was or will but atoms forevermore be.
Yours sincerely,
Physiocrat
Mine is a yellow wedge on top of a black wedge--symbolizing the power of the sun over the darkness.
Right?
sounds pretty bipolar
You know my forum name is supposed to be an engineering pun but I don't think anyone ever gets that, they just latch onto my mental disorder
I'm not really Bipolar though so I've got that going.
I don't get the pun.
It's not a terribly good one. It's a portmanteau of Bipolar and Polar Moment [of inertia] and also "makes sense" being read as a "Bipolar Moment". It has no real symbolism past that, I just thought it was "clever" at the time I thought of it--this is why I'm not a comedian.
I was going to guess it had to do with the moment of inertia.
JP Say, who I actually look like.
