"The garden was planted by Occupy Gardens and allies on May 1st, in defense of local and global food security. While the garden has been growing undisturbed for nearly 5 months, with the help of hundreds in the community, the city deliberately decided to have it removed upon the eve of the Autumn Jam: A Harvest Party and celebration of sharing, community and free local food, which is happening tomorrow from 12-6pm at the garden in Queens Park (northwest section).

The reason? The people did not have permission to grow free food on public land."

What I find odd about this is that the city had it shut down at that time, even though it was no secret that this project was going on, as hundreds of community members were working on the project.  Not sure if the timing was coincidental, but someone on the blog claimed it was to spite people.

This boils down to the whole double standard of public property.  On this, I point you to an excellent post by clayton:

Schools are labour camps.

Who owns the land upon which the garden resides?  The article mentioned Queen's Park.  So the city/government owns it, meaning NO ONE DOES!!!  This is simply the tragedy of the commons.  Without an owner the property is just a hodgepoge of claims over its uses and lo an behold, the claimant with the most guns wins.
