• Did Bernanke prevent deflation?

Which one of the following views do you think is the correct one? 1) bernanke printed a lot of money, there was low price inflation, but there would have been huge price deflation if he had not printed. The money printing prevented deflation. 2) bernanke printed a lot of money, and this did cause big...

  • Great Depression and monetary policy?

Whenever discussing the Great Depression, it is always argued that high interest rates imposed during the Great Depression (Specifically 1931) worsened the Depression because investment was curtailed. This of course seems to run contrary with what an Austrian would argue. There was obviously credit inflation...

  • How a growing economy lowers prices?

Now I understand of course supply and demand, and that as an economy is more productive prices decrease. However, will not other prices have to increase as well if the money supply is constant? When talking about rising prices, the argument is that prices cannot all rise (thus causing a net increase...

  • Advantages of Fiat Currency?

Hey Mises Community members, I'm back with another question. I've been trying to figure out why we have a fiat currency system. There is a ton of information on the 'net about the DISadvantages of fiat currency, but few resources that address its advantages. The best I've found so far...

  • Re: Internet Bubble - Caused by Government?
Was the famous internet tech bubble caused directly by government/central banking?
Yes. The question is which way it caused it. The Rothbardians think that it, and all other economic crises at all times with no effort to check the actual facts, was caused by the Federal Reserve inflating...

  • (Hyper)inflation vs deflation scenario

To increase my understanding of Austrian economics I wanted to compare the views of the inflationists and the deflationists. Some propose that the most likely scenario to happen in the (near) future is high- or hyperinflation while others argue that deflation might occur. Deflation: Bank assets decline...

  • Inflation vs Deflation and Money supply

Hello Im economy student (Prague), and during last few months I read some things about austrian economics. I like it, and Im trying to present this view to my friends whenever discussion about economy occurs. I had a discussion with a friend about inflation vs deflation, where i was a devils advocate...

  • Wages under inflation

I've read in a few places that wages are affected by inflation and deflation later than other prices, but I can't find any books or articles that explain why this is so or that offer evidence to show that it is so. Can anyone please help me find something? Thanks.

  • Does the contraction of bank balance sheets counterbalance the effects of the FED expanding the money supply?

In a commentary on Kitco.com, the author dug up some material he quoted in an attempt to debunk the concerns that people have about the massive expansion of the money supply leading to severe inflation down the road. (Which is my concern) I believe the writer of the qouted material is claiming that bank...

  • How can you have prolonged asset price collapse in fiat currency regime?

Does anyone know of any research, or theory, that helps explain the phenomena where asset prices crash in economies that use fiat currencies? Japan, for example, has seen asset prices for real-estate and stocks decline for nearly 20 years, despite the fact that this nation uses a fiat currency and the...
