I'm watching the Liberty Bowl on ESPN this afternoon and the commentator states that one of the players, and I paraphrase, was over in Iraq fighting for our country. We Austrians know that that is a ludicrous statement but there could be three reasons he said it:
1. He's utterly naive and stupid.
2. He really believes we're over in Iraq fighting for OUR country.
3. He's saying it because it is the politically correct thing to say and to deviate from it would result in immediate termination from ESPN.
My guess would be number 3. If he would have said, "He was over in Iraq fighting a useless and unjust war," he would have been fired, plain and simple. ESPN would have received a boatload of complaints from middle-America warmongers demanding he be fired and so on and so on. It's what we expect from the MSM so there's nothing surprising there. It's perfectly okay for Disney to criticize the war in their movies and TV shows, but to express the same criticism on a live broadcast is a definite no-no. In the end, I'm quite sure the kid is much happier playing football in a bowl game than getting his ass shot off in Iraq.
