Sarkozy is not a "lonely nut" or a "French-speaking Dubya". He's a very dangerous man with very dangerous ideas. He's so dangerous because he's a populist, a demagogue (in the Greek sense) who enjoys enormous popular support, both at home and abroad. He's testing many ideas that have been hanging in the air in the past ten years. The French are an intelligent people ("My government fored me to sell my two cows to give them the money to buy a sinlge cow for a man in another part of the world") but centuries of aggressive national goverments (starting all the way back to Charlemagne) have sapped their strength and deprived them of the will to oppose a tyrant. Let's just hope the country will go bankrupt as soon as possible.
