I remember watching this in theatres and being heart broken at seeing Zorro wanting California to join the Union.

In retrospect I think I would have sided with the villian in the first part (Mask of Zorro) in his goal of wanting to make California independent from both the USA and Mexico. No doubt he did it out of pure greed for himself, but I can't help symphatize a bit.
