Let's say you would have to move, start a business or have a new job in a country you are not familiar with. How would you evaluate the economic environment in it and other freedoms? Which measures would you use, and what sources would you consult? If you could choose between two or more countries, how would you compare them?

For economic freedom I'm only familiar with Heritage's ranking: http://www.heritage.org/index/Ranking.aspx

I know the Heritage ranking and it is pretty useful, for some aspects one can also check the TI's Corruption Perception rating, or the 'Doing Business' rating. All have their imperfections, but that can't be avoided.

Any more ideas?

Edit: how could I forget the Tax Freedom Day!
