Could you imagine if Rothbard were around to read and comment on this? What a feast this would have been for his ironic wit! One group of idiots (brick-and-mortar retailers) is ganging up with another group of idiots (the government) to try to figure out ways to get Internet retailers to pay "unpaid sales taxes." You can see in this article how big business is good for government... it's much easier to threaten a handful of big retailers to 'collect the sales tax at the POS or else' than it is to threaten each and every citizen "levy the sales tax on yourself for every item you purchase and mail us a check at the end of the year."
Fortunately, the Internet is forcing the issue. Hopefully State tax revenues will simply permanently decline, hastening the impending debt&deficit doom.
