We just moved to Alabama from Mississippi. Does anyone know what the state "requires" for home schoolers in Alabama? A search on the state's department of education website returned no results for "homeschool" or "home school."
My wife has read that we have to be part of a "church umbrella school" in order to be in compliance. She stated that these umbrella schools charge up to $300 per family or even $150 per child. I am not into extortion be it from a church or the state. It would also seem discriminatory to atheists for the state to require this.
Any help is appreciated.

That is a link to the summary of Alabama home schooling statues at the Home School Legal Defense Association.
Unfortunately, you are stuck either with the "Church" option or you must hire a state certified private tutor.
I wish I had something better to tell you, but you are essentially screwed. But if you must pay tribute, better to a damn church than the damn government.
