The Xbox 360 is a poor man's PC, with less than half the functionality. Plus, you get charged to play online... And for updates!

Actually you get charged for other extra stuff too, batteries for the controllers, and wireless. And upgrading harddrives is much more expensive then the PS3, which you can use any Laptop harddrive. Plus the quality of the Xbox is much lower. I have a bud who only bought one a year ago, and already had to buy a new one this year cause it broke.

I have to agree but while I do not want to pay to play online, I am not sure of another long term solution for consoles where there is no way for users to run servers. Sony or the game developer is going to have to eat the cost of running servers. In that model I can see issues with games being abandoned. The only solution would be for a simultaneous console + PC game launch and allow the console gamers to play the PC gamers which is what I thought they should of done all along. I refuse to pay for online game content however.

A lot of things about the console games feel like dumb down versions of their PC counterparts. I still prefer the PC overall, I just understand why the consoles are successful (cost).

The 360 controller should come with a rechargeable battery, the wireless adapter should be included and the HD prices are a rip off. The 360 needs to be cool, clean and off the carpet. Those I know who have had problems are either dirty, had their unit on the carpet or obstructed the vents. I am skeptical of any console's reliability as I am still pissed about the original PlayStation's CD laser warp issue.

Stranger:

The PC as a gaming platform has been dead for years. Now that consoles have hard drives, networks, USB peripherals, high definition screens and the most advanced graphics chips, and yet still cost about the same as a mini-laptop with no gaming features, anyone would be a fool to develop games for the PC.

It is not dead. The world is full of fanatics!

I can't wait for Mass Effect 2 to come out.  4 days feels like a lifetime.  I felt this way before Fallout 3 too.

You guys care, I'm sure.  Stick out tongue

You waited for Fallout and then when it finally arrived you felt.... like smashing stuff at what the imbeciles at Bethesda have done to a once great franchise.

If there has ever been an argument against IP it is what it has done to the Fallout series.

Consoles have expensive small space hard drives, that are limited as to what you can do with them. The same goes for the USB devices, you can only put in proprietary or licensed devices. High definition screens? If you call 720p "high definition". Don't say that the consoles are capable of 1080p (Which is still shy of 1920 x 1200 or higher), I have a PS3 and very few games actually run at that resolution, the rest are all upscaled. The ones that do are 2D or were specifically designed for that console in mind (Metal Gear Solid). Consoles also DO NOT have the most advanced graphics chips, even at their launch date they were not advanced. The Xbox 360 is running an aging nvidia card that barely scrapes along. The PS3 fares a bit better, but it is still weak. The PS3's CPU is still very good though.

I've never had an issue separating the two really. I see video games as the same way I'd see soccer or chess. Yes, those pixels form a man. Yes, I just tore apart his vital organs with a burst of high caliber rounds. However, I don't equate it to killing. Its a competition. Just like going paint balling with friends. Killing actual people? Quite bad indeed. Immoral, irrational, illogical, and far too governmental for my tastes.

Anyone see Red Dead Redemption? I haven't been interested in video games for years, but this blew me away when I saw it:

720p looks already damn good compared to 480p. I mean, from 480 to 720 is a huge improvement, from 720 to 1080 doesnt have the same wow factor.

My point doesn't have anything to do with WOW perse. It has to do with 11 million subscriptions to one game. Multiply that out amongst all PC games and then you can then say, PC gaming is far from dead.

Invert all of that and you are correct.  Consoles are cheap because they use budget hardware.  The reason that games are developed for consoles is entirely summarized in one nutshell by EA Sports President Jim Moore.  They believe that console software sales are less prone to file sharing.  There is simply nothing that a console can do for the end user that a PC can't.

It depends on the TV and the Source. If you have a TV with an exceptionally high contrast ratio (like the new LED TV's) and a really good source material. The wow factor from 720p to 1080p is like going from black & white to color.
